Rear View Camera

Does MB offer this option on the E350 sedan? Is it part of another package or is it a dealer installed item?

Thanks.

No such option is available on W211. Instead of the camera, you may get parktronic sensors (park assist) for the front and the back.

It is possible to retrofit a rearview camera into the vehicle but it's not an easy job. If you really really want it then be prepared to spend about $1500 for parts and labor.

This was THE FIRST THING I looked into when I got my E a few months ago. The skinny of it is that it will cost about two grand when everything is said and done.

In addition, the Comand unit must be reprogramed (send it away for two weeks). Afterwards, an RGB adaptor has to be connected to it in order for the screen to display the camera's image. All very complicated...

I decided against it because I didn't want to find myself in a situation where I voided the warranty because of a major modification of the Comand unit.

I wanted it too. Got Parktronic, but that’s not
the same.

Just add Backup Camera to the disgusting MB
antiquated electronics line-up!

wireless rearview camera

Hi guys,
There's a wireless rear view camera thats pretty cheap. The problem is, you cannot see the image on the command system but you need a separate screen (that comes with the camera). You can check it out on Amazon:
http://www.amazon.com/Wireless-Vehic.../dp/B000UHSA3C

Has anyone used it, or know how it is? I have parktronic in my car and its pretty good

Araycho, that would ruin the look of the car. I can't imagine putting that screen on my dash. Besides, my friends make enough fun of nav as it is. I don't want to give them yet another excuse!

Don't forget the "ribbing" doesn't matter. I'd rather drive this car with this NAV, than drive an Accord with that NAV. ...its the total experience that counts.

It can be done

For those of you who may be interested, a solution does indeed exist to replace the anachronistic COMAND system in the W211.

There are some very experienced with high-end vehicle car audio shops that can retrofit a Pioneer AVIC-Z2 unit in the slot where the COMAND head unit sits. There is a modification made my SoundGate electronics that allows the steering wheel volume controls to still be functional, however, the NAV/AUDIO information on the multi-functional display inside the speedometer is rendered inert.

Because the head unit is replaced, the new Pioneer unit must have a new amplifier to drive it, however, you can keep the stock speakers if you'd like.

While the Pioneer unit is exemplary in functionality...it contains a 30GB hard drive that contains the navigation maps, and about 12 million POI's, allows you to rip CD tracks onto the hard drive and create music libraries that are instantly accessible, and the unit can be easily modified to allow no lock-outs while in motion, the drawback is an extremely slow boot-up time upon start-up...about one minute.

The upside is that the unit is a completely self-contained panacea for the discriminating gadget-freak kind of driver that loves the W211's driving dynamics.

The unit has a bluetooth hands-free optional pod that integrates seamlessly with the touch-screen, XM and Sirius can be run simultaenously, and can be connected to a back-up camera.

I'm considering the modification to my '08 E550, but, it comes at a very dear price. With enhanced amplification and replacement of the stock speakers, we're nudging up against the five figure threshhold. But, you get what MB should have allowed you to have initially. I would imagine next year's revamp will have far better COMAND, but, I couldn't wait.

I'll let you all know if and when I do the modification.

FIVE FIGURES??? OUCH!!!!!! Do you have pics of what the end result would look like? I can't imagine ANY aftermarket stereo looking OEM, no matter how expensive.

No photo right now...

But, I'll post one of a unit that was put into I believe another class and a little older model. I'll have to sift through my photos to find it.

Part of the reason for the high cost is the fascia molding that the shop hand-crafts in order to preseve a factory look and feel.

It's flush, and extremely stock looking, not something like a Best Buy or Circuit City slap-on add job.

No, it's not cheap, but, neither is an E550. The unfortunate one teeny drawback to the E550 are the antiquated electronics, but as I've seen written many times in these threads, and I wholly agree with, give me the E550's dated audio/nav aberration over the Accord's state of the art electronics/audio/navigation stack any day. At the end of the day, it's the drive.

I'm just letting you know that if you want to pay, you can have your navi/back-up camera/bluetooth hands-free touch-screen cake, and...uh...eat it, too.

The Pioneer AVIC-Z2 installed in a 2003 SL500. Note the bezel. Nice work.

Audio in Reverse

Having an issue w/ '11 E550 4matic.
Issue: In order to get the rear camera to display on the nav screen, the audio must be on.

Scenario: I have COMAND and audio OFF. I then put transmission into reverse. The Nav screen powers up, to display the rear camera view. The COMAND warnings display AND the AUDIO comes on! Really frustrating.

I'm going down the road w/ loud tunes on then, at some point, turn off the audio. When I get home and put the car in reverse (always back into driveway) the audio comes on blaring.

Seems the only way to defeat the audio is to turn the volume down or mute the volume before I turn the audio off.

Dealer initially indicated my 2 week old car needed a softwarte update, but after leaving it for the day, they advised the software was the latest release and that ALL 2011 E-class operate similarly.

Anyone else having this issue and/or know of a fix?

i think the stock command looks better albeit being stone-age in functionality.

They have very good products for very reasonable prices even with night vision cameras:
