Must buy MB Warranty @ pickup

I'm picking up my '05 E500 tomorrow. It has 32K miles on it. Car is CPO until 10/09. Dealer is offering MB warranty for another 2 yrs. for $2595. Correct me if I'm wrong but another way to look at this is:

"I think the car will give me => $2,595 in repairs bet. years 10/09 - 10/11".
But I have to buy it tomorrow @ delivery. After that ext. warranty is an option.

Is a $2600 repair bill over 2 yrs. common? With a build date of 08/04, there should be no Valeo radiator problem. That is big $$$. The car is made in Germany, not elsewhere. I drive about 4,000 miles/yr. bet. my cars. So in your opinion, do you think its worth it? As always, thank you.

First of all, the dealer's charge of $2595 is very high. I got my extended warranty less than 2K from MB for 3 more years and up to 100K miles. Second, the price for the extended warranty varies from dealer to dealer, just like buying a car, and it is negotiable. Search the internet for MB warranty from MB dealers and you will get a better price than you are offered.

One major repair can cost well over $1000 so I would opt for it. Since the price of the warranty is negotiable, as the previous poster mentioned, I would try to get it for a lower price.

...and you can bet they'll want to throw it onto the car loan too.

05 E500 Wagon
I bought a cpo 05 E500 wagon about 4 months ago. I did get a 2 year extended warranty from MB for about what you quoted. I would think that if you were interested in keeping the car for 1 to3 years or if you think that you might be loading up on the mileage fast, its not worth it. Since you don't put alot of mileage on your cars and may want to keep it for a while this decision is a toss up. The extended warranty is for peace of mind and thats why I decided to get it.

My 2007 will be a year old Feb 28th. Its been so good I've been thinking of keeping it for a while if I can find a place to buy the MB ext warranty at a good price.

Warranty cost quoted is about accurate...anything less is last year's warranty cost, which was indeed lower.

I just bought a CPO 04 E500 and would NEVER have taken delivery without getting the longest additional period possible...my 00 E320 was purchased in 02 with 4 additional years, and it paid for itself 3x over...good luck and welcome to the club!

I just bought an 2003 E320 and I bought the CPO Extended Warranty. However, my dealership told me that it wasn't negotiable. I guess they lied to me. Stop being so cheap and buy it. What else are you going to spend the money on...****?

Hey guys, try a search in this forum for discounted MB dealer warranties and the gal in CA who offers 25% off. The MB warranties are very negotiable.

With the exception of JoeyBE320, thank you all for your advice! (I'm his daughters godfather).

BTW, JoeyBE320, how 'bout showing us some pics of your new ride?

Nice to see some members from the NYC area. Hope to see you all during a meet.

Barry45rpm, yep, u're right, they want to throw it on the car loan

I also maintain/modify my Supra and Max, and granted they are nowhere as complex as MB, but a few owners here who DIY have given me the confidence that the car can be maintained by myself. Get the STAR service CD, and that alone should help in a big way. I do have my reservations about the airmatic, and other non-mech. items though. I'm sure those are $$$.

Worst case scenario, I can buy an aftermarket warranty. Research here has led to JM&A (sp?) which was also mentioned by my salesperson as a company that the dealer would honor.

What sucks is I have to decide if I want the MB warranty when I pick up the car tomorrow.

Thank you all for your help. Will keep you posted.

Sorry to hijack your thread but I was also under the impression that you had to purchase the warranty at the time of delivery.

I am in the market for a 2006 CLS500 and wasn't sure if I was able to add a warranty at a later time before the factory warranty ended or if I would be forced to purchase it at the time of delivery as well.

tks. everyone. sunkist: That's what the dealer is telling me. Buy the MB warranty at time of pickup, or no go.

TPAbnz: Can I get an MB warranty from the "gal in CA" after pickup?

If so, then that would be the best option.

Thanks again!

03 E500 and Corvette
I would not drive it out of the dealership with out the warranty.

I have had the following failures after 50,000 covered under warranty
  • Ball Joints Would have cost about $600
  • SBC Pump Pump alone is $2500 labor probably $1000
So the cost would have been somewhere around $4500 without the warranty. The SBC Pump and ball joints have a TSB on them. The pump on the O3 was warranted 10 years due to failures so perhaps your SBC pump will be a warranty item.

Really nice car but I am disapppointed at the Joint and pump failure. So I would buy the warranty for 100000 miles.

I bought my car new and wasn't going to get the warranty (this is my 3rd benz), but got a good deal $1800 for 8 year 100K miles. To date i've used it once in 45K miles for a transmissioin mount (they don't list the cost for warranty work i guess less than $300 for the repair). You mention that you only drive 4K miles a year, if you expect to have over $2,600 in repairs in just 8K miles i would consider not purchasing that vehicle.

Sorry about sending a second message. you said that the warranty is an option afterwards, please explain. I know when new you can purchase before the original warranty expires is this the same with CPO? as someone else mentioned the warranty is negotiable, and you can even purchase it from a different dealer although it can be more of a hassle sometimes. Do you have the maintenance history of the vehicle? I purchased a CPO BMW and they provided me with very detailed info about the vehicle including each time the vehicle was taken to a service facility and what the problem was. if you have the extra $2600 cash it may be worth putting it into an interest bearing account, if not financing the warranty with the car may be best if you decide to get it. Good luck!

If you're planning on keeping the car, then I would highly recommend getting the extended warranty...MB makes the best product on the road IMO, but they are not cheap to work on after the warranty...As stated above I believe the extended warranty can be changed, but then again it may not be 0 deductible either...just make sure you ask all the pertinent questions at delivery.

One can acquire an aftemarket warranty (non-MB) after delivery of the car.

I did not ask for the maint. history. (good point). She's certified until 10/09. Any existing problems SHOULD crop up before that. New problems are a totally different issue...

And u're right with the interest bearing account.

The responses have been great. Thank you everybody. I'm heading over there now, and hopefully I'll have an MB in my garage today.

Looking forward to participating in this forum with even more knowledge after today!

Mercedes-Benz
SBC pump would have been covered anyway out of the factory warranty. Mercedes issued an extended warranty on that part.

Man I am getting ripped, Buying my car out of town I live in chicago and MB dealership is in Boston. They made a mistake when he quoted me the price of the final cost that we both agreed on. He forgot to add on the shipping charges of the car which was 795.00 so he said he was going to eat it and It was my lucky day, but then he said the car comes with a 1 year 100k warrenty already and wanted to know if I wanted to extend it. So I said how much and he quoted me 2595 for a 1 year or 3900 for a 2 year. I bought the extra 1 year for 2595 and put it into the loan. This all happened today and he is Fed Xing the paper work over to my home for me to sign the final paperwork. Looks like he is going to fed x over some new paperwork without that extra coverage!

$3900-you are dealing with a crooked dealer-why not find a car from a more trustworthy source (ie-what else has he lied to you about??)...

RE: 05 Warranty

If I were in your shoes I would get the warranty. Suggest that you offer them $1600.00, and negotiate to somewhere in the middle between that number and their price....they should have some $$ room to come down.

Good luck and post some pics when you get it!

Just brought home my '05 E500 AMG Sport!! Car is amazing. My first Benz (first premium car actually) ever. Lots of torque. Premium Package, Lighting Package, Heated Seats, AMG Sport Package.

I want to thank eveyone for their help.

I did not get the 2 year extended warranty. I thanked the GM and he told me a bit of news: He said its not really fair that the consumer has to "take it or leave it" (MB ext. warranty) at time of delivery. In January, MB may opt to give the purchaser the option to buy the warranty AFTER delivery. I imagine the warranty begins at time of purchase, so you short change yourself a month or two, but it adds more comfort over the "take it or leave it" attitude.

Your AMG warranty costs more than the regular E-Class. (Should actually be $2395/yr. or $3995/2 yrs). Why is he charging you $200 bucks more?

I've attached dealer pics of my new ride. Thanks again everyone!

I haven't seen the paper work yet, you might be right with the 2395 price. I don't feel too bad then if it comes in at 2395 but I could still get them down alittle bit maybe?
