I could be wrong but I will my best to answer your question
Here's what I've been told: The engine might benefit if you can supply more air (more air + burn more fuel= more horsepower) however more important is the quality of the air (cold fresh air draw from outside not from the engine compartment).
The reason being is cold air is denser and contain more oxygen with all things being equal the same engine should produce more horsepower if the air it sucking in is colder so if you install one of those short ram intake in theory the engine looks like it will breath better due to less restriction on the cone filter vs the stock air box.
However, consider what the engine sucking in is all the warm (may be hot) air from inside the engine compartment so I would consider that a no no.
Also, from what I've learn longer intake runner produce more torque and shorter ones rev faster but in day to day driving how often we rev our car close to redline all day long?
Here is an article I found on the web about air temperature vs horsepower http://wahiduddin.net/calc/cf.htm

When I had my A4 Turbo, I read somewhere that every 100 degrees that you lower the intake temperature, you gain 10 HP (or something to that end) that is why intercoolers are important on turbocharged cars.
The ultimate goal should be feeding MORE COLD air, and with these, all you would be feeding is MORE HOT air, since the OEM intakes suck air from in front of the radiator, therefore killing any additional air being fed.
Cheers

Also I agrees on the intercooler is a must for all turbo (or any force feed engine) because cooler air reduces pre-ignition thus you can run higher boost (always admire those E55s passing me couldn't resist our forcefeeded cousin)

my cousin have a carbon fiber intake host on his c230, and it seems that the car has more power and responds. but you also need to change the air filter. too. but i believe changing the air filter is good enough
