I just purchased a MB V60i cell phone (CDMA) which intergrates perfectly into the car's system.
I have not activated it yet (Verizon is the provider) and while searching the forums came across this post re activation procedure erasing the MB software : Click here

Has anyone else experienced this ( pressing *228) when trying to activate a used cell phone? I find it incredible that this can happen, but obviously did to cyclrder. Anyone else do this successfully and or unsuccessfully ?

The V60i is not 911-capable, so Verizon will not activate it. The V60s is 911-capable.

I called Verizon w/the Dec # before I purchased it and they stated that it most definitely could be activated.

OK. That's not the information I got, but I hope it works out for you.

Well, ast it turns out I mis interpreted cyclryder's post. I thought by "update" he was talking about the activation process. It's, in fact, a software update for the PRL (Preferred Roaming List). So I can see that it may screw up the MB software.
Obviously, I won't be doing this update !

228 option 2 (update PRL) should be safe. It is 228 option 1 that could wipe out you MB firmware.

How did you get Verizon to agree to activate a non-911 CDMA phone? Is this being treated as an ESN swap on an existing account?

Interestingly, Verizon dose not require existing/used phones to be E911 compliant, only that they be CDMA compatible w/their network.
In fact, if you check their website, they offer a Blackberry that is not compliant.

Apparently, if you read their FAQ, E911 compliancy is a "work in progress".

Pressing *228 OPTION 2 only updates the roaming capability, and Verizon says it should be done Monthly while in your home area. (The '04 had a V60)
