Tire Pressure Monitor

Did anyone order this? If so, how well does it seem to work? In terms of utility it would seem to be worth the $630 compared to other options that are purely cosmetic.

I've ordered it but have not yet received delivery of my E500... and I've not heard of anybody else having it.

But I am buying this car both for its safety and performance, so it made sense to me to spend the incremental $ for this option.

I asked about this option to many salesmen. Surprisingly, all of them said, it is a waste of money and a couple of them told me why. They basically said, that the sensors are too sensitive. The sensors will go off when the pressure is off by 0.5 lbs/cu. ft. (USA) - which could happen in many driving conditions.

Well if that's the case then this is one more issue for them to address. I would think that there would be some kind of driver input as to how sensitive the alarm should be.

I guess time will tell.

Abhansali, I post this reponse from a member in the SL forum - I beleive the SL has had this option for a while:

It's always an option on the SL and well worth it. If you have an SL55 or an SL with different sized front and rear wheels, you do not get a spare, instead a can of gunk to seal the wheel and an air pump. This free's up useful space with an extra cubby in the trunk.

Point is, if you do not have a spare, it's good to know if a tyre is loosing pressure because you may be able to so something about it ahead of a major problem. Better than than being stranded on a cold wet November evening miles from anywhere.

I've not had any experience of changing tyres with this option but I expect that any company who can take proper care of my rims will be able to keep it working.

Actually, you've reminded me, my front right tyre is low, or so it showed yesterday. It was showing 2.7 bar, the others 2.9. This pressure difference was not enough to cause it to warn me, I saw it when playing with COMMAND while at a stop light. No shortage of in-car entertainment in this car!

I read some article that tire pressure monitor planned to be standard safety feature like airbag starting from 2004 on all cars. I do not know how far this to be true. Anyway, I noticed that MB cars are very sensitive to tire pressure, at least I fixed problem pulling to left just making tire pressure equal on left and right tires. Of cause buying $20 pressure meter can solve the problem. However, dynamic tire pressure monitoring is more important for safety, but if it doesn't work as expected, then it's too bad.

Cool

I ordered the tire pressure monitor so that I can replace the stock rubber with run-flat tires, which require an onboard tire pressure monitor for use. Right now, I am thinking about using Michelin Pilot Sport A/S Zero Pressure tires. This is one good reason to order this option.

I think you meant to address to ashahashah, I'm actually ordering the Tire Pressure Monitor because I hate to unscrew all those dirty caps just to find out the pressure is okay...and of course, there is never any water nearby to wash your hands with...I figure if I am plunking down almost $70K for a luxury car, I want the "bells and whistles" that make it a luxury.
