When is a slow leak tire unrepairable?

I have a very small piece of metal lodged in my rear passenger side tire. It's not on the sidewall; it's stuck on towards the outer edge of the tread.

I went to a Big O tire shop. The took the tire off the car, pointed it out to me, then told me I would need a new tire. According to them, the tire can only be repaired if the little piece of metal was lodged somewhere towards the middle of the tread.

Can you guys (and gals) tell me if that is true? Or can the tire actually be repaired?

True, If its near the edge of the tread that is the shoulder area and a puncture there is not repairable and could create a blow out. thats the area of the tire that flexes the most and builds up the most heat. get that tire off of your car now before it creates a real problem for you.

How about a photo to show the exact location and size?

I have had the same drill pulled on me. This has been aggrevated by the Firestone debacle. I have always heard that sidewall damage is game over for a tire but now the tire resellers have taken it to a new level. Further I resent a Costco tire 'expert" telling me what speed rating and which axel I HAVE to use for new tires. I am capable of controlling the speed of the car and frankly, 139 mph (or even 112) is not a regular thing for me.

I've just left the car parked in the garage. Later this pm if I have time I'll pull the tire off and post a photo to get your guys' opinion.

The little piece of metal isn't really on the edge of the tread. It's closer to the edge than the middle of the tread though.

Wife picked up a nail in the TL couple of months ago w/in about an inch of the edge of the tread. Took it to Firestone, and they said no way, get a new tire. Wanted a 2nd opinion and took it to Sears Tire Center, 35 minutes later, tire plugged and I was on my way at no cost. They really took good care of me and no problems since. I think it's just a judgement call on the tire techs part of whether he wants to mess with it or not.

An inch from the sidewall is marginal. The repair could be OK or it could start leaking again or, worst case is that it causes a separation and you have a sudden blow out. The Firestone tech was being conservative and had your safety in mind while the Sears tech was pushing it. Good luck!!
