E-270 Avantgarde
I drive a E270 - 76k miles

Around town I get 26-28mpg
Motorway I get around 38mpg

Here is a picture the last time I was on the motorway. At the start of the journey I had a out of town drive of about seven miles I think at slow speeds, then straight onto the motorway, cruise control at 80mph.

Mine resets to 22.5 mpg, whether I'm stopped or moving.

I have an '08 E350 4Matic with about 6,000 miles. Still getting broken in. I notice the MPG is still gradually getting better. Right now I'm getting about 23 MPG in a mix of city and highway.

As a fellow E350 4matic owner who really works at getting good mileage this is hard to believe. My average for the last 1000 miles is 22.2. What are you running your tire pressures at? How much time do you spend on the highway?

My wife drove our '08 4matic wagon on a highway trip recently (some luggage and 2-1/2 people in car), and I was surprised that we only got 23 mpg. She drives very slowly and smoothly, so it wasn't her driving. Maybe once the engine is broken in, the mileage will get better. Around town driving (lots and lots of stops signs) mileage is no better than 14-15mpg (not surprising as our BMW wagon got around 14 mpg).

Are you using premium gas?

I average about 20-22 each time on my daily commute (NSP, Throggs Neck, I95). My average speed is usually about 45mph.

My very first trip, driving the car from PA where I bought it to Long Island, I had a mpg of 24.x. That's the best I ever got.

Is there any other choice? At $4.00 a gallon I can't think of a stupider thing to do than to run regular. Now if the stations are selling regular out of the premium pumps then that could knock the mileage off. On my 10 mile commute home today I got 25. I'll try to note my average speed. But again I work at it and I'd be suprised that anybody is doing better in mixed driving with a 4matic. The EPA mixed number is 19. The previous owners long term average was 20 mpg. Since I know him I know he wasn't a lead foot.

Don't get me wrong if somebody can get better mileage out of these cars that would be great. I'd like to know how.

Glad to hear. Didn't mean to acuse, I just know many people are starting to run regular because they are penny wise and dollar foolish as they say, so I thought I would ask.

Unfortunately the 4Matic used on your car and my car does eat a lot of gas. The new generation 4Matic on the S-Class and C-Class and soon CL550 is much better on gas. This is because it was designed with the car and also to work with the new 7-speed transmissions.

Europeans might get better mileage on their vehicles, because as far as I remember, from when I visited the US, the octane in your gas is around 87-88-89? and we only have 95-98 and Diesel in Europe

There really isn't much difference between your 22.2 and my 23. My normal commute is about 23 miles. About 10 or 12 miles is highway at 70 - 75 MPH and the rest is secondary roads with stop lights, school buses, etc.
Tire pressures are set per the gas filler door for under 100 MPH.
I always use premium gas.

That's actually not that bad. You will notice an increase when you engine is getting closer to 10,000 miles. Most probably you will be able to go up to 25~26 using the driving style you are using now.

In the US we have 87 (regular), 89 (mid-grade), 91 or 93 as premium.

However, they are actually the same octanes as in Europe.

Europe uses the RON (research octane number) and the US uses MON (motor octane number). The MON is calculated differently so the octanes are actually pretty equivalent.

Most US pumps use PON (Pump Octane # which is an average of RON and MON.

Below is an approximate comparison chart, these numbers can vary by as much as 2 grades

RON MON PON
90 83 86.6
92 85 88.5
95 87 91
96 88 92
98 90 94
100 91.5 95.8
105 95 100
110 99 104.5

Ah, smart, okay, never knew we calculated the octanes differently - learn something new everyday

Happy 4th everyone ! I drove down to the shore last night and on the Garden State Parkway going between 60 ~ 70mph I got 25.5mpg. The new car only has 150 miles on it so it will only get better but I was pleasantly surprised. Oh this car is a 4matic...

Not bad, but if you try to keep that average speed all the time and drive reasonably even roads, you would get more. The best I've had from the W211 was 47 mpg, absolutely steady at some 90 km/h (actually not exactly flat road but not too bad).

Yes, one more reason to prefer diesels, no need to understand those complex petrol/gasoline properties.
