V-Belt Replacement

I need some help! I wrestled all afternoon trying to take the v-belt off my 06 E-350 4Matics because it was making squeaking noise from time to time. I figured I get it done before the winter comes. From the attached pic, I played with the pulley 1, 2, & 3. Only the bolts come off, but nothing moves.

I looked at previous posts especially this one (https://mbworld.org/forums/showthrea...highlight=belt). But I still couldn't figure this out. Mine looks different than the one on the previous pic.

Can someone tell me which one is the tensioner pulley and how to pull it down?

May not be the v-belt but rather the upper guide pulley making intermittent noise - Service Campaign2008070002 AUG08 https://mbworld.org/forums/showpost....&postcount=137 . Have your dealer check VMI to confirm your vehicle is included.

Thanks, konigstiger.

I should have mentioned that both 2 idler pulleys were changed out by the dealer, but they refused to put a new belt on citing not covered under warranty. That's when I decided to change the belt. I've done it a number of times on my Bimmer in the past and thought it would be the same.

I figure #2 is the tension pulley, but I can't get it to move down. The screw just keep coming off instead of pulley coming down.

Time for a paradigm shift.

Just "diving in" to do mechanical work on a 21st century car--especially a Mercedes--is the height of folly.

Mercedes very conveniently provides you two methods to have the proper service procedure documentation at hand before starting--which is the only intelligent way to do it.

1. Service DVD--call 800.for.merc

2. Startekinfo--subscribe for a day and download all the procedures you want. http://www.startekinfo.com

Using procedures provided by Mercedes will tell you how to do the job and advise you of required special tools if any. The Model T era is well and truly over.

uhh numb er 3 is the tension pulley... you'll need a torx socket dunno the size though and a breaker bar and the belt will come right off. I'm actually gonna do that real soon myself i'll see what size torx piece you need

Well I tried that yesterday. #3 accepts a torx bit - not a socket. As I turn it counterclock wise, the screw and the metal cover behind the screw started to come out. At that point, I screwed it back together and figured it wasn't the one.

On Pulley #3 look behind it or behind net to it there should be a piece that looks like a bolt (not really a bolt but a piece you can put a socket and pull up). Pull up and release the tension, remove the belt and put new one on..

I Thought the same thing Bestoverall did. The tork screw would be the place to move the tensioner. Otherwise it is very tight to get behind the tension pulley.

On some are a square boss area that you can put a wrench on,, but I haven't found that on our E500.

Belt change is do soon,, but not yet.

I took a couple of close-up pics on the #3 pulley. I think the nut on the 7 o'clock position on the first pic is the tension release bolt. And the protruding nut behind the pulley (red arrow on the 2nd pic) is the nut to pull up.
Can someone confirm?

yup that's the one... but to complicate matters i looked at the pdf file in that link you had bestoverall and some tensioners use the middle bolt while some use the stud bolt you have i'm gonna take a look at mine tomorrow

The E500 hex point can't be seen easily as in your pic. because it is hidden by the belt

The Hex you show in pic 1 in the bottom right is the hex which is a tork point. This is where the tork wrench is used to pry the tension pulley. If you use the boss shown in your pic 2 I am not sure what might happen if you pry on it.

From the Manual

Remove the belt by

Do this by using the torx recess below the
tensioning pulley (3) and swivelling in an anticlockwise
direction (arrow).
Take off poly-V-belt (1) and decelerate
tensioning pulley (3).

Found the torx on mine,, not easy to see on the E500 because it is hidden under the belt

I finally got some time this morning and went at it. This had to be the easiest DYI I've done. The nut (I think 17mm) on the first pic in my previous post is the only thing that needed to be rotated counterclock wise to loosen the belt. You don't need to bother with the protruding bolt on the second pic. I didn't even have to pull that hard, and the belt came right off. Slip the new one in and make sure all the grooves are lined up and slip it on while pulling the nut counterclock wise.

The whole thing took less than 5 minutes. Now once you know how to take the belt off, changing idler pulleys would be a piece of cake. Just a screw or two, and off they go. (for those out of warranty and need to change the pulleys due to noise).
