W212 Diesel 4matic?
Anyone know if the diesel version of the new platform will have 4matic available?
FWIW - a local dealer told me they are already ordering E550's for the new platform!

I've never purchased a car before it has been publicly introduced but I should do it this time to avoid being left without an E-class for too long (I've sold the W211 and have to give it away at about February time next year while W212 sales start on March and the queue must be really long even if cars sales are low now).

W211 4matic diesel???
Well obviously they don't sell them in the US, but i thought there was a space issue in the chasis or something that made it not feasible for them to offer it. Are you telling me that they offer a W211 Diesel 4matic in europe?

Don't live in Europe, but I know they do and have for some time. The W210 E55 AMG was even offered in a 4-Matic in Europe.

They will not offer the w211 bluetech desiel in a 4MATIC, there is not room for the front driveshaft and transfer case with the extra cat/oxidizer req for the low emissions output.

Can you be more specific with the extra cat that is the issue? If I look at the cats on the 211.089, I don't see any missing filter units compared to the 211.022 with option 474.

Every drivetrain a manufacturer sells in the USA must be EPA certified, which involves something like 50K miles of actual test driving. It's expensive and MBUSA decided the return on this investment in the USA wouldn't be worth it.

I cannot follow your logic, there are so many other MB models that are not available for the US market, specifically those that have a lot better mileage figures. How many should be shot then? I'm afraid it would not make sense to sell an E200CDI in the US, I don't know if the diesel 4-Matic would be popular enough to cover the EPC approval costs etc. but obviously there is a limit somewhere.

HOwever - i'm also reading about their hybrid cars coming out in 2010, so that is probably what's going to be coming as their solution....

I'm mad there's no diesel station wagon for USA, 4Matic or not. The 2wd is probably still an EPA compliance issue as Mercedes usually has different rear gear ratio for wagons.
