Intermittent heater problem

My car started having problems with the heater few years ago. First, it will not produce as much heat as indicated by the temperature control - i.e., weak heating. Recently, the heater is having intermittent problem with the heater working or not working at all.

My heater will blow cold air (even at a maximum heat level) for days and then it will go back to proper working condition and this cycle of intermittent problem persists. Sometimes this intermittent problem occurs several times a day when I restart the car.

I read some of the earlier responses to a similar heating problem and it was suggested that I replace the heater control valve. I think it makes a lot of sense but will the defective heater control valve experience intermittent problems? I would think that once it is bad, it will stop working but obviously, I am not an expert here.. Thanks in advance for your help.

I would think that any value that has to open and close would operate intermittently (sp?) as opposed to completely "failing" in a open or shut fashion.I would look to having it replaced.

Thanks. Any ideas as to what might cause the heat control valves to go bad?

Might just be one of those things.I mean , you make a couple thousand of something you are bound to have a few failures.

Similar situation with the intermittent heat, except that it has now gone inop.

Dealer wanted $350-500 to fix the problem. It looks like a managable DIY project, thanks for posting the instructions.

Where should I purchase the replacement valve? Through the dealer or are there better MB parts stores online?

I did mine, simple job, takes about 1 hr if you take your time and make sure you have all the tools you will need from the git-go.

OK, just ordered my part as well. Any ideas on how much they (local foreign car mechanics, not the dealer) might charge to install this?

OK, part just arrived, but I noticed that it is not 211 832 05 84. Instead, it is 211 832 06 84. This part has what appears to be an extra duct coming off of it. (See pictures)

Has anyone tried the changeover valve replacement with this part? I have a 2003 E320 and am afraid that I will get into the compartment to find that I have 5 ports coming off the valve and only 4 hoses. I think that the part that was sent is for a later model E320.

Thoughts?

2118320584 is correct part # for 320/500, 21218320684 is for 350/550

After replacing the heater valve on my 04 E500, I still am experiencing a heating problem. I get cool air through the vents, and have to adjust the temperature above 85 degrees (F) before I start to feel any heat, and even then, it's not gradual. I'm use to my other cars getting warm above 72 degrees, and could swear this was not an issue a month ago (only had car past 2 months).

Hi spinn PLEASE FOLLOW UP WITH YOUR SOLUTION

Same problem + This is not the valve, nor the small coolant pump, nor the heat radiator, nor the dash electronic display/control, nor the temperature sensors, nor some of the accessible actuators motors/flaps, nor the front SAM module. A very very costly problem and no result.
One last tought: «The key word is intermittent. Problem lies past the heating radiator since it would get very hot inside the car and very little air would go through it (4 actuator motors and flaps "failing" intermitently in unisson??' really!!) »

Yes I did, except the improbable 4 stepper motors/flaps. It would have to be a common controller, connector or ground if they exist. I am looking for more detailed shematics or functionning principles.
