When it pops up & swings open, there remains a hole next to the drivers seat (USA) which perfectly & safely holds a 12 oz. soda can almost up to the top... and over the passenger's seat, there is an elevated ring that lightly grips the bottom inch and a quarter height of a normal size hot cup somewhat precariously. I would not drive & depend on that ring to not allow the cup to tip over. The can is secure, and will not tip... sloshing is another thing.

Thanks for the replies, I live in South Africa where we drive Right Hand Drive Mercs, I specifically ordered a cup holder for a right hand drive car. However this cup holder opens over the drivers seat. I.E. they have supplied me with one for an American, left hand drive car.
I found the top ring a bit too cumbersome as it gets in the way when you change gears, now I know why, well off to the dealer tomorrow.

Ahhh, see? That's what happens when driving on the wrong side.....
When mine broke, I just took it out, put an empty box of Altoids in there as a spacer and voila! It holds a Venti coffe perfectly!

My 06 and now my 09 have a sliding cover (like an old roll-top desK) over two fixed-position cupholders recessed in the center console. If drink containers in these do spill, it goes into the base of the cupholders, which is like a small well.
My 03 had a cupholder resembling a mechanical tulip. It also had a longitudinally-split center armrest, much more comfortable than the current car.

I contacted the dealer who tells me this is the only type of cup holder in production so the whole of South Africa, the UK and Japan has cup holders that open the wrong way, or as Tashakes says our seats are on the wrong side.
By the way left hand drive cars makes perfect sense for drinking in, at least you can use your right hand, I have to use left.

Help - Cup Holder Wanted
Looking for a pop-up type cup holder for my 2004 E270cdi. Must be an option as it shows in my owners manual (copy attached) but my car only has a loose plastic box in the center console compartment.

Part # is 2116800014. Remove plastic compartment, install cup holder following frontal guides - audible catch heard indicating proper install. If you want instruction sheet PM email address.
