Secondary cats removal and x-pipe installation

Guys,

Car is at an exhaust fabricator's right now getting the secondary cats removed, and an x-pipe installed, where the resonator currently lives.

Should have it back this afternoon and I'll try to get some sound clips as soon as possible. It's 7* in my part of Maryland right now. That's right, 7*! So, there's zippy chance I'll be taking video today. Try to do it this weekend.

Ya, winter ran off on us. It's weird. I hope it stays like this for the rest of winter here. I'm like a bird, I have to migrate to warm weather. I can't do the cold, especially snow. I have a lot of respect for you guys that live in the midwest and the east and anywhere else that gets really cold and a lot of snow.

Half of my E63 kit is on... When the AMG mufflers go on i'm definitely installing a x-pipe. It'll be really interesting to hear it without the secondary cats. Good luck m8!

It turned out exactly as I hoped it would. Perfect tone for me. Not too loud, not too quiet. There is absolutely no drone inside the cabin and there is a noticeable increase in db in the lower RPM range with just a touch of raspiness (if that's even a word). Wide open throttle is music to the ears.

Of course, it's not C63 sweet, but it's right where I wanted it to be, as far as audible note.

I'll try to get a clip this weekend, if it's not too cold.

Did your muffler shop take special consideration of the x-pipe location? or did they use the OE location?

They just put it where the resonator was. They were of the opinion that even if it were off a couple of inches from the optimal position, it really wouldn't make a difference on these low horsepower engines. They certainly sounded like they knew what they were talking about when it was explained to me. Plus the fact they fabricate exhaust systems for race cars, I figured I'd take their advice.

FWIW, the resonator is actually an x-pipe. Looking inside of it, it looks like an x-pipe with baffles. Nothing more. So, putting in this location was more than likely the right move, since that's where MB thought it should be.

So you cut out the secondary cats? What if the primaries fail? $1050 each to replace.......they did have a 8/80 warranty.....

Actually, all 4 were replaced about 7 thousand miles ago under a recall. So, I'm probably good for the life of the car. And I have the secondaries and resonator sitting in my garage.

How often do catalytic converters fail? In my years here, I haven't heard of one yet. But I guess anything is possible.

I asked them to call me when they were about an hour away from completion so I could take a few pics while it was still on the lift. I got the call and showed up 30 mins after that. It was sitting in the parking lot when I arrived and there was another E500 on the lift getting brakes done.

But, there's a possibility of a set of headers in my near future. I'll have a hand in that install so there will be pics.

Video/sound clip coming soon. If it ever rises above Arctic temperatures.

It warmed up into the 30's today so I was able to take a short sound/clip video. I don't think I had the best placement for the camera because I can still hear alot of engine noise with the exhaust. Anyway, I'll try to get it off the camera and uploaded soon(ish).

Will start a new thread.
