Tires

I wish we could do a survey question like on other forums. I am wondering what tires people have on their E-series sedans. I have winter tires right now, and 17 inch pirelli tires all matched. I am thinking about going to 18 inch AMG wheels staggered for summer. In terms of ride / performance what is the best combo.

Front:245/40-18Rear: 275/35-18

Those are the measurements. Will this look ok?

To create a poll when you post a new thread, simply click the 'Yes! post a poll' checkbox at the bottom of the page, and set the number of possible responses you want to include.

When you click the submit button, you will be taken to the poll creation page, where you can specify the question and the list of responses you want to include.

You may also want to specify a time limit for the poll, so that (for example) it only stays open for voting for a week.

...More help at FAQ's. (Search for "Polls")

My E63 AMG wheels have 245/40/18 and 265/35/18. This is the OE tire sizes

My only rec is to stay away for Nitto 555's. I bought them for the low price---now have to live with terrible road noise----Continental Contact3 was only $300 more for the set----

FYI - Mercedes does not recommend running different wheels on the CDI for some reason. I think you may have to modify your inner fender if you decide to do so.

The E63 wheels look great on them and I almost bought some, but really do not want to roll the inner fenders.

OEM

Our 320 had MXV +4 Energy OEM. At 38175 miles (yesterday) the rear were at 1/32 and the fronts at 3/32. The noise was approaching unbearable. Even after previously checking with the "tech" at Costco, they refused to mount 225/60/16 Primacy MXV tires because they are " more than 3 % increase in diameter (speedometer error)". The Primacy tires are clearly superior to the Energy models and cheaper but alas I succumbed to the draconian rule of the Costco tire ***** and allowed myself to be coerced into OEM fitment by the $70 rebate. Also the Energy tire has rim guard bead which is a necessity with wifey's parallel parking skills. $632 out the door

I would just put some Pirelli PZero tires on those 17" wheels. These are perhaps the best tires on the market, and will handle extremely well while giving a bit of extra cushion over 18"

I had pzero's on my C230K SS and they were the best tires i ever had! Second goes to the T1-R's. I've got Yokohama ES100's on my 19's and they're sh*te in the rain. That's not good for Raincouver!

I have pirellis and conti's right now. I think I'll buy a set of Michellins, and see how they do.

225/55-16. 20k miles and still no appreciable signs of wear. I rotate my tires every 5000miles.

Yeah I rotate every 5k, and get an oil change too then. I know a waste, but it makes me feel better...

Michelins. On all of my MB's I only had Michelins. I really like them.

I replaced the 17" OEM Continentals on my 2003 E500 at 25,000 miles with new Pirelli PZero tires........ran them one year about 10,000 miles and they were high noise. So, I decided to upgrade to new MB 18" wheels and bought Yokahama tires to match. I'm very pleased with the Yokos but they provide a softer ride than some folks like.......I'm an older guy that prefers smooth comfort ride over the harder performance ride tires like Michelins. You can check the customer feedback such as noise, ride quality, etc, on various tire brands and sizes on TireRack.com.

I had continental contitouring ch95 when I bought the car with 23,650 miles on them. Lasted me over 23,000 miles, which is good where I live. I got a set of sumitomo (don't remember what model. A friend of mine recommended them to me who has his own tire and service shop. They're pretty good so far, but car has been in service for over a week so don't know how they are overall.

Interesting you should say that. I just read a post from the Edmunds guys getting Sumitomo tires for their M3. Here's the link.

Ya, I got the HTR Z's. They've been really good so far, no noise. Haven't driven in sport mode yet so really have been taking it easy with her especially since she just got a new transmission.

So how are these tires now after 30 days or so?

Funny you ask. I just came across another post from the Edmonds guys giving an evaluation of the tires. You can find the post here.

Still top notch in my opinion and they handle a little better than the conti ch95 i had, or maybe it's just my mind thinking that.

For me the most important thing is thread life, as I have to drive 5 miles through canyon roads to go home or get out of my house and I am not a conservative driver

www.tirerack.com not only has a rating chart for each tire they sell, such a noise, ride comfort, etc, but also feedback from users of each tire. Of course, a tire will work differently on each particular year/model vehicle, so comparing unlike vehicles is somewhat faulty.........but better than nothing!

I recently went with the Michelin Pilot Sport 2 A/S Plus - stock sizes 245 40 18 front, and 265 35 18 rear. Great traction and quiet so far. I have about 2,000 miles on them. First picture is with the old Yokohama S.4's. Decent traction, but noisy. The second picture is with the same size, new Michelins.
