Brake Wear Sensors

So, I bought this 2006 CDI for a VERY reasonable price to start off... So today I started going through the car, I am an emergency vehicle mechanic so I'm not completely lost.

I found several things damaged, no big deal, all replacable no problem. But, the "Brake Wear - Bring to local Stealership" message is baffling me. The front brakes were absolutely shot so I bought a set of MB Pads with sensors... but when I went to put them on... pads fit fine, but the Drivers side sensor wiring is not there and I ripped apart quite a bit to try to find it to no avail. So, the error msg is still there and before I completely rip things apart I should make sure that all the E320's have 2 front sensors! The rear pads looked good to me, but after seeing how close the sensors are in the front, it's possible those are being tripped off also.

So.. main question, do 100% of the 2006 E320's have 2 front brake wear sensors?

Thanks Guys.

As of MY06 the front left 50% wear sensor that starts the FSS service processor (i.e.: + after service letter) was eliminated from series production due to sporadic AM radio interference when braking in the rain (DTB P-B-82.62/499 MAR06). Therefore, your vehicle is equipped with two 100% brake wear sensors, right front and right rear.

PM your email address and I will forward DTB P-B-42.10/90 JAN08 to assist in determining the origin of the warning message.

Membership FYI: The 50% wear sensor is not the cause of the “Brake Wear Visit Workshop” display only a 100% wear sensor can generate this warning – not completely plugged in, corrosion at the sensor or driver’s side SAM, open circuit or ground discontinuity, etc.

"sporadic AM radio interference when braking in the rain" Only MB would even fix this!

This is a great response, I appreciate this alot.. I need to further investigate the rear pads! The other night it was so late and I had just found a crack in the rim that I just wanted to pack up and go home... so I did!

I Appreciate the quick response, Thank You!

Check to see if the sensors are completely plugged in, and for corrosion. If all seems to be fine and you are still receiving the message, PM your email address and I will forward the before mentioned DTB covering all possible causes and the procedure to correct.

ok, sorry for the long period of nothingness. I did figure out the problem. First off, there was only one sensor in the front on the right side, the left side was eliminated by the factory for that year. So I went ahead and changed the front pads and sensors, no change (Pads were wiped bad) So for giggles I thought I minds well just change the rears even though they had plenty of pad left... so I bought the pads/sensor... well, once I disassembled the rears, I found the problem. A moronic mechanic worked on the car and put a bad sensor back in the car. BRILLIANT! So... R&R brakes and the light is now off, no reset required.

Glad you found it. The sensor, is just a loop of copper wire in a plastic housing. When the pad wears it cuts the wire, opens the circuit and you get the brake warning. In a pinch you could use the old sensor and connect the wires that wore through to put the light out. But if you did this you would be like all the other cars on the road without a brake pad warning system.

I know this is an old thread but it is a good place to keep information in one place. I want to clarify, when you say the sensors are on the right side do you mean the passenger side of the vehicle for us people in the USA / Driver side if you live in the UK?

I ask because the ESP light on my CDI keeps coming on due to a heavy right foot and slippery winter conditions. I had a mechanic tell me that the brakes needed replacement "soon" but I have not had any warning lights come on.

2005 E320 Base
If I am not mistaken, I think there are three sensors on the 2005 Mercedes E320 Base (USA version), for W211.
The passenger side Front and Rear (USA) part#: 2115401717, 2205400717, 2205400617, 5S11560, EWS49, PWS176, SW0505
The "Driver" side Front part#: 2115400717, W2436301MC, 78101257
So, total 3 sensors
