Engine Ticking - Loud!

There is a loud "ticking" sound coming from my engine.
Its always there, from startup to shut down. Never actually noticed it until my parking changed and I am now up against a wall. Also quite noticeable when another car pulls up close to me. Everything seems normal..what could this be?

What car do you have? Do you have the right oil in it?

I was going to ask not only that, but what is the service history in general, and what type of fuel do you use?

She's an E240, 2.6 V6 and I am extremely finicky with servicing.
Oil changed every 5000 Kms. Only Mobil Synthetic.
Fuel either 93 or 97 Octane only.

I have limited experience with the 2.4 engine since it was not sold in the US in a W211. Does the car consume oil or smoke? It could be as simple as a fuel injector ticking or something as serious as the valvetrain or rotating assembly.

Mine has some ticking noise sometimes louder than other times.........I was told it's normal and caused by the fuel ejectors. I'd suggest ap10046 get the MB Dealer service depart to look at it to be sure.

NOISE OF VALVES TICKING AT START.

hi ,

I have a 2003 E320 , it has on it only 22500 miles (36000 KM) on it .

sometimes when I start the car for the first 1 or 2 seconds I hear a strong valves ticking and then when the oil pressure builds up the noise is gone.

unfortunatly its not always there , I went to the dealer a few times to let them hear it but when I was there it didnt make the noise.

has anybody had the same problem ?

what could be done ?

thanks.

Warm the engine up well, take it on an open road and drive it full speed for as long as you can - it will most likely go away - these cars cannot be babied - they need to be run at high rpm's to keep their throats clean.

If you have a heavy ticking you might have a defective hydraulic lifter. Normal lifter noise is a very low fast clicking that is barely audible. If you have one that is as loud as you claim you might want it checked out.

What's the mileage on the car? I'm not familiar w/ the ticking sound in MB. However, in BMW's the periodic ticking sound is usually a result of leaky seals in the VANOS. These seals usually leak after 75k or 100k mi. The valve cover needs to be removed in order to access the VANOS.

I have been driving Mercedes for many years, in the past the oil filter use to have a valve that holds the oil pressure up even when the engine was turned off , so when you restart you will not hear the valves knocking.

sometimes then if the valves where knocking at start , you would replace the oil filter and the problem was gone.

but the 2003 E320 has an oil filter without a valve , so what is suppose to keep the oil pressure up to avoid the knocking at start ??

I really dont beleive this is normal.

I got that same ticking sound too since my mechanic change my motor mount. And I just read it on a different thread, that it was in fact the motor mount. I'm not sure why the motor mount will cause any ticking sound. I'm bring my car back tomorrow to have that motor mount re-checked.

ticking sound when I start to accelerate. no ticking sound when in neutral even if I rev up the engine.

If you are experiencing ticking (piston slap like sound) when accelerating between 1200 and 3000 rpm then it is most likely the motor mounts. Revisit to confirm modified mounts were installed current part numbers being front left 2112400517, right 2112403017.

I just saw my invoice from the previous motor mount job. Both motor mounts part# was 2112400517. Is that possible?

The mechanic will check the car again tomorrow for that ticking sound. How can a motor mount produce a ticking sound?

EPC (MB electronic parts catalog) shows right engine mount 2112400517 replaced by 2112403017 for your 04 e500.

Hey, I concur with vettdvr. I actually have the exact same problem (loud ticking) in my 98 SL 500. That is how I came across your post; It is most definitely a hydraulic lifter in my case. Many-o-mechanic have listened and that is the diagnosis. Fortunately, it does not cause harm to the engine. Unfortunately, it is EXTREMELY loud and annoying and the part that needs to be replaced is under $10; although the work to replace would be the equivalent to a complete engine overhaul, so, around $3,400 or so. Needless to say, it won't be getting fixed anytime soon in my case unless I find myself some sugar-daddy with a heavy wallet! HAAA....I kid....Kind of....

Loud ticking sound

I drive a 2014 E350 and the engine has made a loud ticking sound since I first bought the car. I took it into the dealership and had them inspect it. I was told that the fuel injector system in Mercedes has a greater pressure than most fuel injection systems creating a lot more noise. The car drives fine it just has a louder clicking sound than most cars
