DIY rattle fixes?

My W211 is seriously working on my nerves with just 2 rattles.

One is coming from somewhere beneath the dashboard (I think from below the a/c unit) and rattles a lot on bad roads (and we have a lot of those here in Belgium) and also when the throttle is past 1/2 in low rpm's.
Being a 4 cyl diesel, it vibrates a lot more offcourse, but that still doesn't mean it should rattle this much.

The other seems to be coming from the panoramic roof, like there's something loose in the light unit. But I'm not sure about that actually.

The dealer has only tried to fix these rattles for about a million times, but they're not very good at it.
In fact, it seems like they didn't even try.

I'm fed up with it and wanted to try it myself, but I don't have an idea where/how to start.

I allready tried to dissassemble the dashboard, but I can't remove the A/C unit because the wood trim needs to be removed too, to be able to reach the screws for the audio unit ?
I also tried to remove the wood, but it only slides an inch or so to the right and then it's totally stuck.

I hope you guys can help me with pictures, a detailed explanation or some exploded views because it's driving me nuts...

You do not need to remove the wood to remove the audio unit - only the storage compartment/CD Changer, ashtray, and shifter surround.

According to an exploded view schematics, there should be 2 screws that hold the A/C unit in place, behind the wood strip?

Anyway, now I need to know how to remove those other things

Mine has a high frequency whine at very low db's when cruising a/c off windows up and sun roof open. The whine is from the engine or acc. Nothing failing I can find almost like a gear whine in the 64 Chevy II. Just annoying with a/c on you can't hear it but it is still there. Would not expect this in $67K car.

This happens on all of them pretty much. I think they clean something with the rails, but it doesn't go away, just comes back. Man, my friends dad's SL55 has the pano roof and it sounds horrible and loud. I mean mine I can't usually hear when I have the music on.

Konigstiger, I remember you posted something in regards to the cleaning of the pano roof.

Yeah, but that's a different noise, I've already had that one and the dealer actually solved it by lubricating it

This one is different, it's a real rattle from the interior, I think from the ceiling light unit.

I have 1 that comes and goes, it isn't very loud, but being the most audible, it can urk me something fierce. It comes from right around the right post of my driver side sun-visor, like it's the way the interior cloth sits against the metal of the roof or something, almost sounds like very light popping popcorn when it's audible at all. Anyone experience this??

Thanks to the pdf files I received from konigster (thx mate!), I've been able to fix 1,5 from the 2 rattles

The one in the roof appears to be completly fixed, there was 1 wire at each side which I believe to be the cause of the rattle. I've taped them to the housing and the rattle has stopped so far.

The one in the dashboard is a bit more tricky, the wood was quite a pain in the *** to remove, especially because of my fear for breaking it
The problem was/is the a/c unit as I expected. I think it's plastic vibrating against other plastic (around the area of the speaker), or just against the dash itself.
I fiddled about with it without actually doing something, screwed it tightly back in place and the vibration is definitly a lot less, but not completly gone.

Rattles are annoying....started to get my first rattles. Seems like its coming from my instrument cluster, namely the plastic cover over my instrument cluster. I just turn up the radio..

Yes - none in mine yet. That is one improvement over the W210 - the sunroof shade rattles in the W210, along with the rear headrests in some cases.

Hello Blackfox and konigstiger,

Any chance you have a copy of the pdf document you used to help fix your panoroof rattles?

Thanks,
Steve

Sorry, I've formatted my computer a while back and forgot to backup my documents, I'm afraid the pdf's are lost

The rattles are back though, it's driving me clinicly insane
Dashboard rattle goes away for a couple of minutes if you punch it, or if you push down on the piece between the a/c unit and the clock housing.

Pano roof rattle is incredibly annoying, seems to be coming from the rear part of the roof or the rolling curtain. Don't have an idea how to fix it...
