i have 60000 miles on my car but its 5 yrs old so i am planning on changing them...so its E320...does that mean i have to only buy 12 of them since its 2 per cylinder. and is it a diy job ....

Gonna get mine done ,tomorrow At almost 63K on the odo,gonna do them ,oil (Mobil 1 0w40) and check the tranny,power steering and anti-freeze. Like Benzo said ,the car runs great,but I always say proactive maintenence ,is better than reactive repair...

Oh yeah where can you get these plugs(#7422) for $5. I've looked in some sites (kragen and autozone) and they are selling for $12.00 a plug. Please post a link on where to purchase that cheap!!

Is it necessary to change the plugs after 5 years, as the maintenance booklet states, if the car has low miles? My car has only 21K miles but will be 5 years old next year.

Make sure that the sparkplug is gapable (is that a word?) Last time I tried to gap a spark plug I didn't read the box. It said not to gap because it will damage the platinum tips. (This was on an Infinity plug were NGK). If you use reg plat plugs from bosch they might work but if you use plat +2 or +4 you can't gap them..
Oh yeah where can you get these plugs(#7422) for $5. I've looked in some sites (kragen and autozone) and they are selling for $12.00 a plug. Please post a link on where to purchase that cheap!!

I think the probability of sticking is low. I just changed our E500 plugs 2003 last month at 85,000 miles and they were relatively easy to change with no issues.
So it is your choice.

At 21K miles the plugs are not worn out. I would only be concerned about the plugs seizing in the heads. So I suppose you could remove the plugs and reinstall but that would seem like wasted effort if you didn't install new plugs @ $5.00 or so each.
So if you aren't concerned about seizing leave them. If you are change them. From a driveability they probably are ok for a while longer.

But you still changed them,right?? I guess because the material used to manufacture them,they don't show considerable signs of wear.... Wonder how long you could go before you HAD to change them?? Not that I would put my car to that kind of test ,mind you,but just wondering.....
I will never pull a plug out at 85,000 miles and not replace it with new!. So yes I did change them.
85,000 really is not abusing the car or plugs. Check your manual for your plug frequency. The service dept at the dealer told me to wait until 100,000 miles. My guess it that 85,000 based on my driving was a bit too early and a conservative change.
So if you want to change earlier feel free but if it were me I would not change them early. I would reco you just follow the MB manual for the plug change freq. I think 85,000 was a good time for me to change them.

I do understand the plug color stuff and the tuning aspect, just don't know much about the conductivity of platinum!

That's what I understood, but there are quite a few people on this forum smarter than me, but it made sense.
Did you Guys change your wires too? No But I was very careful to twist them FIRST then use the 17MM wrench to remove them so as not to break them. All 16 came out without breaking. They are however difficult to remove and install to get properly seated.

Actually the $1900 was probably for the 100000 mile full service with all the checky checks.

Are they wires on the plugs or are the coils attached directly to the top fo the spark plugs? I talked to an Independant today that said the coils were directly mounted on the plugs. I've never seen them, that's why I ask. The answer to this question will tell me if I want to use that Ind or run as quickly as possible the other direction!

Ok got to laugh on that one. They are designed similar to the corvette with a coil for each cylinder and mounted on the top of the valve cover. But they don't go Varooooooooooooooooooooooom like my corvette does on the track back straight away.

Bosch plug numbers are decoded as follows:
W - Seat type and thread (W = M14x1.25 w/ 21mm hex)
R - Version (R = Resistor)
9 - Relative heat range (2 thru 13,lower cooler, higher hotter)
F - thread/electrode length (F = 9.5mm thread, 3mm electrode)
C - Electrode Material (C = Copper)
Is the Platinum +4 running hot (Heat Range is #9) .... What do the specs say for our cars ? I want to get these platinum plugs with 4 heads (it generates spark to 4 corners from the centre ... hence quick combustion) but I dont want to exceed the specified heat range
