In another world, can I put install the unit on the first photo if I currently have the one on the 2nd photo?

Yes, it will connect, but it will not work properly and will give trouble codes. The one in the top picture is for a quad-zone climate control system. The one in the bottom picture is not, and this is what will cause the problem.

That's nice to know...

beside the cosmetic, did you find any gains by doing this?

I would have expected worse AC performance when the 4-zone unit does not see all the sensors it expects and not all actuators (like those controlling the rear/side air nozzles).

Is this confirmed? This was my first Benz when I bought it and I didn't know what to look for. After years of owning it and finding out more about the "other features" I'm beginning to wish that I had done my research.

No, I was just speculating how the control unit would behave when for example the more complex sun sensor (that it is built to operate with) is not present. It might ignore a missing sensor properly, or not. Those who have done the conversion must know from experience (at least roughly).
