red messege on cluster saying that i didnt close the gas cap?
sumtimes when i drive my 04 e500 a red messege on the cluster lights up and says that i have not closed the gas cap? but its alwayz closed very tightly
the first time this happend to me i pulled over opened the cap and closed it again the messege went away. However the second time it happend wich was today i just turned the car off and on again and the messege went away however after 5-10 mins my check engine light turns on.
anyone know why this happens? if it is a problem? or has had this type of problem before?

If you make sure you give it the little extra to seat the cap you won't get the alarm. Our dealer told us when we bought the car,, be sure to seat the cap.

yeah if you started the car with cap loose and then tightened it
the message can still appear
on 1999-2004 I think I was told by MB techs it takes 3 cold starts to reset the computer, then it should go away,,
so on your 3rd start assuming the CAP is on tight, message should go away..
happened on my 02 CLK.. once

You may need a new gas cap. The cap has a vent that allows air in but not out if the vent fails, the computer thinks the gas cap is off.
