2% of sales price for California registration fee??
Hi,
The dealer from NY state collecting the sales tax and registration fee for California but they told me it is 2% of the sales price (I am paying $45k for a used car). 2% seems very high.....Does anyone know what is the california registration fee for buying a used 2008 car with sales price of $45k?
Thanks.

Yes, I did and it came out as $375 but the dealer in NY insist it is $1040 which is 2% of sales price....... However, when I was in the online calculation page. I cannot use the last one becasue the vin number I got is not registered in Calfironia yet. But I tried the first two links for new car purchase and nonresident car buying from out of state and both gave me $375. I just do not understand why they came up with 2% of sales price...
If you go to www.dmv.ca.gov you click on Other Registration and you'll find a link for calculating the Sales Tax and the registration fees for whatever county and zip code you live in. You'll need to know how much you will pay the dealer for the sales and use tax.
Hope this helps.

I would take that extra step if I were buying an out of state car. I did that with the TT I bought for my daughter. I knew everything I needed to pay for before I gave a check for the car.
Hope this helps.

I purchased a car a number of years ago in New York. The dealer obtained temporary intransit plates from DMV in New York. I drove the car to California and registered it paid the sale tax.
I purchased a 2009 E550 from a dealer in Louisiana had it delivered to a dealer in California. The dealer gave me temporary plates from Louisiana good for thirty days no charge.
You have register the vehicle in California within twenty days. If you are a day late there is a 10% penalty on the total amount of the registration and taxes.
I had to get a smog check before I could register the new vehicle in California. Two days late because the first day I selected was not available. The next day I selected was on a Monday that was two days late penalty was over $500.00.

The CA license fee is currently .65% of the price of the car. It goes up on May 19th (doubles). Vote no on prop 1A on May 19th and the DMV fees and recent 1% sales tax increase will be rolled back.
The fee was 2% several years ago.

That's right. It was 2%. The NY dealer is incorrect. If you've lived here for some time, think back in history. The 2% fee was why Davis got ousted and the Governator took over. He dropped it to .65%. The dealer should be charging you the .65%.
In a couple of weeks (May 19) it goes up to 1.15%. You have to buy before that date to get the old rate. And sales tax went up 1% too, btw.
