Exhaust Question!! X pipe or H Pipe?

Hi Everyone,

I know a lot of you guys with modified exhaust systems are running X pipes in place of where the resonator use to be. Has anyone ever thought of doing an H pipe? Is there a big difference in performance? Which is better? Is anyone running a H pipe?

Thanks!!

Also I'm planning to take the secondary cat off.. Has anyone Smogged there car without the secondary cat and pass? does it make the car sound a lot loader? I don't want to be annoyed in the cabin...

ThankS!

Update!!! I ended using an x-pipe... I also installed quad tips during the x-pipe install.. I used the stock muffler (non-amg).... It actually ended up the way I wanted it to sound... It sounds like it did originally at idle but once you get on it a little it give you a little growl and when you rev it in park you hear the V8!l I couldn't spend a lot on this little project but I'm very happy with the outcome... I just wanted to complete the AMG kit look... I ended up adding a little v8 growl also!!! Not bad for $150.00

Talking Update again!!!

I decide to scrap the stock mufflers!!! I went back to the muffler shop the next day and had them install a pair of magnaflows. I didn't like the way the tips were sticking out of the car when they were on the stock mufflers. (They stuck out 2inches from the bumper) So I decided to just buy new mufflers and fix the exhaust tip problem!!

During the install of the magnflows I had a chance to start the car with just pipes, it sounded amazing and suprisingly now too loud. It sound like an exotic car.(kind of raspy and low) When I heard the open exhaust I knew that the magaflows were going to be okay.

Sound:

Idle: Very light rumble at startup. Once it is at idle you can't even here the exhaust when inside the car.

Street Driving:
Normal driving: During light accelaration, light drone but not bad.(between 1600-2000 rpm) After 2k rpm the car quite, I here more wind noise than exhaust.

Hard accelaration: The car sounds amazing you can hear the V8 sing an exotic car tune. Not like a old school muscle car but more revy rumble. Again not loud inside the cabin but just enough to hear the accelaration.

Freeway:

Cruising: Almost no exhaust noise, light rumble. (again not annoying more wind noise than exhaust)

Hard Accelaration: Amazing!!!

New exhaust setup: Resonator deleted, added x-pipe, Magnagflow mufflers and resonated dual exhaust tips.

I'll post pictures when I get home tonight.

I little warning I owned cars that had loud exhaust systems. Comparing the cars I've owned to my current setup. The car should have came stock like this. So my quite might be be loud to someone else. Though my wife thought the exhaust tone was fine.. And she hates loud cars!!

Oh yeah.. The not spending a lot of money on this small project went out the window....

I did a little research and the x-pipe seems to fit my liking. Since we have true dual exhaust.(two exhaust pipe) Adding an x-pipe create a better flow because of the exhaust pulsing through both exhaust pipes. This pulsing creates a vacuum which pulls the exhaust gases out of the pipes faster. H-pipe don't do this it just evens out the exhaust pressure on bought exhaust pipe.(resonator already does this) Performance wise, the difference between the two are very little. I decide to go the x-pipe way since I found one locally.

I had the magnaflow's prior and hated the drone at 1800-2000 RPM. At first, I didn't think it was bad, but the more I drove it, the more I hated it. And you're right, the drone is only under 2000 rpm, but that's right where my 7G tranny loved to keep the RPMs most of the time. Hopefully, you don't hate it as much as I did. WOT does sound good, though.

Enjoy

Thank you for the explanation. Ok, so I'll stick with the x-pipe then.

+1 for x-pipe...better flow
...I had the x-pipe previously and there was a difference...

here's a link regarding a magnaflow x-pipe:

...just curious, were you planning to upgrade the exhaust tips to the AMG ovals...it'll give your back bumper a 'much more full look'

Did your muffler shop have the x pipes or you ordered them from magnaflow?

H-pipe

easier to fab and at normal operating rpm's on a street driven Mb will yield a few more ft lb of torque at low rpm when compared to an X pipe install.Much cheaper to build also

Thats what I was originally thinking.. Easier to make but since I found an x pipe I went with it. I also heard that the H-pipe has a lower exhaust tone compared to the X-pipes more raspier sound. Either way not a big difference like adding headers and gutting the cats.

If that's the case, then on a E320, I'd rather get an h-pipe for the little extra low end torque and deeper sound, since it is a V6.
