Yes, it was water that was getting into the trunk lid itself, not the trunk compartment. The problem was the seam between the main panel of the back trunk lid......there's a rubber seal between the two portions of the back trunk lid. My warranty covered the repair when the dealer ordered a new trunk lid panel and then had to install and paint it to match my vehicle's color.

Wow, thats exactly what I have. Every time I wash the car, the back of my trunk lid leaks water right around the license plate for about a 1/2 hour. I hope it's covered under my warranty because there are some scratches on my trunk lid already that would be nice to get rid of! I'll give you an update when I find out.

how do you know that water is getting into the trunk lid?
I initially thought you meant into the trunk.

I know I can't speak for mcleantmw but in my situation it's simple. Water doesn't get into the trunk compartment nor get over all my stuff, it leaks out the back on the ledge under my license plate after I wash my car. I wipe it down but it comes back in a pretty significant amount, I repeat the wipe down process for about 30 minutes.

It was pretty obvious.......there was water splashing around inside the truck lik when you'd move the lid up and down. After a heavy rain, I took the vehicle into my Benz dealer and let the service manager hear the water splashing around inside the lid........wasn't any doubt about it.

1,053 Miles
None
2009 E350
581 Miles
Car pulling to the right - sent to dealership for re-alignment, adjustment bolt installed in left camber, steering wheel re-centered, and a bunch of other adjustments that I have no idea what the heck they did. At least it drives straight now (even though the steering feels a tad heavier than before... wonder why???).

I was looking at one that had several chassis componates including ball joints changed before 115,000, the owner did not mention any trannie or engine issues but that doesn't mean they don't exist. Regardless, I'm afraid the CDI has too many issues for a car whose past was so stellar and virtually built like a truck both chassis-wise and engine-wise. I'm tempted to just rebuild my factory hand built 87 TD wagon when and if I live long enough although I do like the looks of the 320, I'm not sure I believe in it or that it is even in the same class as the older diesels were but those days are forever gone from MB anyway. Thanks for the headsup

But don't get excited when one hits 100000. Mine will but the trail of parts is almost endless to get there.
Ok I also forgot the heater valve and ac fan replacement.

25k+
Heater valve replaced - hot air comes out of rear vents
AC fan malfunction
Mildew smell from AC
All fixed under warranty, and haven't returned except for the mildew smell. It's out of warranty now, and dealer won't touch it. Any idea how to fix this?

By the way, I decided to fix the water leaking into the trunk lid myself.........I could take it back to the MB Dealer that fixed it originally a couple years ago to redo it. And I'm still on my CPO warranty. However, they would have to order and install another lower panel with the rubber gasket insert and then get the panel painted. Just too much a hastle and they might mess it up again or the paint won't match, etc, etc. So, I just used a tube of Ruscoe Permanent Clear Sealer on the seam. Used a fine tip applicator on the tube and did three applications to fill in the large gap on the right side of the lid panel. It filled in the gap well and no more leaking......the sealer isn't noticeable unless you look very closely. This sealer seems to be pretty good stuff: Bonds to aluminum, steel, glass, wood, masonary, ceramics and fiberglass. Anyway, that's my fix for this issue.

Here's my assessment of the issue. There's a drain in the middle part of the trunk lid lip...........has some type of fuzy material covering it, so water can drain out. I think sometimes that stuff kind of drys out from the rain and car washes and when water gets into the trunk lid, it doesn't drain well and you can hear the water splash around inside. Mine was so bad that it was not only draining from the drain but all along the bottom of the right side of the lip. I did ask my MB auto body shop whether the water getting inside the lid would cause rust and they said no since that lower lid is plastic and the inside of the trunk lid is aluminum........at least that's what they told me. If you want your MB Dealer to fix your issue, I'd suggest you wait until you get the water to settle inside the lid and can hear it splashing around from either heavy rain or right after going through a car wash........then immediately take it to your dealer so you can let them hear the water splashing inside. That's what I had to do three years ago when I got them to fix my leak under the warranty.
