Tilt steering wheel not tilting

I recently noticed that the tilt function for my '03 E-320 does not tilt - either up or down. The telescope function does work. I can hear a slight tick when I move the control lever up or down but there is no movement of the wheel. Any advise?

Warranty covers repair/replacement. Could be a number of things reset/adjustment, or software update (intermittent memory problems), or steering column jacket part # 2114603116 needs replacement (for comparison shopping, parts.com $592.25).

Out of warranty DIY inspection PM your email for WIS to attempt adjustment.

There is a small plastic gear in the mechanism. That gear sometimes strips and needs to be replaced. Happened to mine under warranty and it seems like it was not a big deal to fix. I have been told that in most cases the failure of this gear is caused by the driver holding on to the wheel and using it to ease himself out of the car when exiting. Thats what I had been doing and quite frankly still do.

Does anyone know what part number for the plastic gear?? Can that gear just be replaced and not the whole unit it is housed in? Has anyone DIY replacing this gear??

I just realized mine is does the same thing... Telescpoing is okay but when I try to tilt, I here something buzzing but no movement!!!

konigstiger, Can you please send me the DIY inspection procedures?

I'm out of warranty!! I'm going to have to fix it myself...

Thanks.....

Part is only a couple bucks but is fairly labor intensive.....

Not only is it labor intesive but quite intricate. If you attempt it you may end up doing it multiple times and risk further damage. Do not understand why you must do it yourself because you are out of warranty. Won't your dealer do non warranty work or don't you have the ability to pay him to do so????

LoL.. I've always done my own work on all my cars... I guess I opened myself up to that comment.. I never got use to paying someone for something I can do with proper instructions or documentation... Also labor intensive and intircate to a person may not be to another. I don't drive the car often so I can take it apart and not worry about putting it back together that same day..

Thanks.. Anyone else...

I also had this happen to me and it was repaired at the dealer. They had to replace the little motor which controls the tilt. From the looks of the work order, it looked like quite a bit of labor.

This thread has reminded me to turn off this convienience feature, since it just annoys me, and it is one more system to break down in the long run. I now remember that I did the same thing with my last premium car which had this feature (92 Legend)....goes back a bit.

Well I would qualify myself as a peasant, has anyone here actually done this yet? Mine just died this week.

Been a while since I last posted; surprised my id is still active.

I'll have to find out how involved this is before I decide to go that route.

Thanks
