Those unsightly dealership badges

My car has the dealership badge on the trunk. It is about the size of a silver dollar, maybe a bit bigger. Are these things held on by double sided tape, a rivot, or what? I would like to remove it, but I dont want to damage the trunk or the paint. Anyone taken these off or have any suggestions? Thanks!

We are lucky today, for even the factory badges and lettering is held on with trim tape. You should be able to use a piece of fishing line to cut through the trim tape, and then use a trim adhesive solvent to remove the residue. Then polish and wax as normal.

A silver dollar... you're lucky. The one they put on my car was easily twice that size! I just pulled on it easily and it came right off with no damage. I actually did it in front of them before I drove off the lot. Makes me crazy that they do that stuff. They do have nice tag frames, though. I kept that on.

VM&P Naphtha from any Hardware store/Home Center will remove the adhesive, also removes bugs & Tar from the paint & also when dabbed on the carpet/door sils will dry clean those areas of hard to remove stains.

Came off easily

The fishing line trick did it. A little Goof-off to get the residual adhesive, and then cleaned it, waxed and polished. Looks great. Thanks for the help. I had get that thing off...bugging the crap out of me. The license plate frames I also changed those out for a nice plain chrome one.

All the dealer marketing has been removed!

If you've ever read the MSDS sheet for VM&P Naptha, your brain cells would run for cover.

You can get non-toxic adhesive removers from any medical supply store. Medi-sol works well.

(letting the car sit in the hot sun for a while to soften up the adhesive can make the job a bit easier....)

Glad it worked. If only all of life's problems had such easy solutions.

Wow! Usually the most I see in SoCal are tag frames (no dealership badges)... except for CarMax which seems to be more like a "sticker/screen printing" instead of a "badge". However, I know that "badging/sticker/screen printing" cars with the dealer logo is pretty common place in other parts of the country.

Personally, I would NEVER buy a car that had been badged... but maybe I'm picky like that...

Chokaay,

I think most of the folks on this forum agree with you. The badges that seem to be common place here in the northeast are a real eyesore. This thing they stuck on the vehicle is a metal medallion. Because it is metal, I was concerned that it might have been "fixed" to the car mechanically. No shortage of great people and great advice here at MBWorld! I am quickly becoming a habitual visitor here...almost every day!

when i bought my car i made sure they wrote down "no dealer badging anywhere on the car" so they put 2 license plate frames with the dealer logo in my trunk

The easy way to remove a badge or sticker is to heat it with a hair dryer. This loosens the glue and off it comes. That is the way car dealers remove this stuff on trade ins.

I used Goo-Gone for the air bag warning stickers on the sun visors because it has a lemony smell.

I used WD-40 (who's inventor just died this past week) on my trunk-lid dealer badge.

3 weeks ago I also used WD-40 for gum on my carpet.

Careful with WD-40 - it is very flammable.
