4matic wheel size - same as RWD?

I'd like to get winter wheels/tires by picking up a used set. Would any 211 set fit on a 4matic or do they have their own size? FYI, I have an 07 E550 4matic.

4 matic, same size all around.

I think the biggest consideration is that the tire size has to be the same all around. From what I understand you can not use the sport set-up with different width rims from front to back.

i'm in a similar boat. Looking to get 19s for my sport package 4matic and suggestions are to get them staggered. 245x35x19 F and 265x30x19 R But being 4matic, will it screw up the tranny/torque converter since they are different sizes? Need to know before i replace my 17s and order some 19s. Maybe have to get them non staggered for 4matic.

More research ?

You are welcome of course to do your own research, but from what I have found, all of the staggered rims from MB have a note next to them, "Not compatible with 4MATIC models." I remember buying my E63 rims and initially the dealer said they wouldn't fit, they thought my vehicle was 4MATIC and of course I got the explanation why. Maybe there is a forum member here that knows otherwise, but without being absolute certain that staggered would not damage 4MATIC, I would go with the same size all around. I am by no means the authority on this subject, I am just passing along what I have seen in MB literature.

(sorry for the bad news)

From MBUSA.

"Aldo,

Staggered rims should not be used on all current model 4Matics.

The reason: Very slight speed differences front to back will wipe out the clutches in the center differential."

there ya go. decided to just get new tires this time and wait on the rims.

I honestly don’t understand why the width of the tires has to do anything with 4matic.
I think as long as the rolling diameter of the tire is the same, it should have no problem…

thanks for the info. looks like my 19s that i get will be non staggered. Thats fine. At least i can rotate all 4. Still have car under warranty thru 2013 Nov. and don't want to add anything that dealer can use/say that cause a part to fail.

I went to a 245/45x17 tire on an 8.5 inch wide wheel all around setup from the stock 225/55x16 on an 8 inch wide wheel on my '04 4Matic wagon. The only issue I'm having is that over big bumps and cornering, I'm hearing a very slight squealing sound like tire screeching. I've checked for rubbing and can't seem to find anything. I was initially thinking it might be rubbing the air spring but the shock is in between so there's a good 10 cm of distance. If I can't find the problem, I might just go straight to running a spacer to be safe. I'm wondering if that extra 0.5 inch of width changed the offset. Anybody have a good source for good rates on spacers and longer wheel bolts?

There is a LOT of misinformation in this thread being spread so let me set the record straight:

https://mbworld.org/forums/e-class-w...dth-tires.html

This should explain everything. In order not to have the center differential constantly working and therefore wearing out the unit or causing issues with other components such as the transfer case, the rolling diameter front to back should be within 1/10th of an inch wheel and tire included. If it is above this you risk damaging the transfer case. Therefore proper staggered setups should have 30mm difference in width and a size down in sidewall, IE 245/35/18 and 275/35-18 for 18" wheels, and these numbers grow to a 40mm difference with 19" wheels according to ThreeMBs - check the brand of tire also.

That being said it isn't ADVISED to run staggered on 4-Matic as it may change the handling characteristics of the vehicle but as long as wheel and tire diameter is the same there is no problem running different widths.

Also, running spacers may be good for show cars but there is no way to do this that is safe and will get a lot of support here for a daily driver running 16s. If your wheels are having a problem because they are 8" wide running 225 pizza cutters, time to revert back to your old setup.
