$250!!!
No kidding, for that price you can get a top-of-the-line Garmin that will completely and utterly blow away the Command NAV in performance...and future map updates are like $70.
I hate to say it, but the MB NAV system in W211's is a turd in performance, interface, and location and polishing that turd with a $250 DVD upgrade is just going to leave you with just a shiny turd and a hole in your pocket.
MB ought to recall the whole nav system...it's that bad.

Its hard to believe that people here are still debating the merits/faults of the 211's NAV for the entire run that this unit was available (2004 - 2008). It is what it is, and that's all it ever was, and let's say after 2004 everyone knew what it was all about and chose to get it anyway.
If its in the car, it should work as designed or repair it. I would only invest in a NavUpdate new map disk when I found the roads/streets had changed so much, in so many places that I was unable to get where I was going quite frequently. An incorrect comand to "now keep left" can easily be avoided by simply looking at the road signs on the newly altered road and following them for the next 30 seconds.
It will always get you there.

I think I probably have a 2006 map, but if I buy the latest nav map, do I need to update any software? I think there was some kind of Nav Update disc? If so what is the latest version of Nav Update Disc for 2007 W211?

No MY07 should not require navigation processor update. Current navigation-database disc is v.9 released last month and available from navteq.com or dealer (MB part # 6460257).

For example, I had to update my nav processor when I went from the 2004 to the 2006.1 map; however, I did not need any update when I went from the 2006.1 to the 8.0 map.
I suppose that if I had gone from the 2004 map directly to the 8.0 map, bypassing 2006.1, that I would have been required to update the nav processor at that time. Maybe someone else can verify if this is accurate.
I think this is basically what the chart from konigstiger is saying.

You would think it would be. I know it's not for 2006.1. Well, at least my nav unit didn't see it. Maybe the update stuff is only on the initial map release for a particular version. For example, the update stuff would be included on 2006 but not on 2006.1. Likewise, it would be on 8.0 but not on 8.1.

safer options
garmin, and others, sell a bean bag adapter for about $10-20 that lets you rest the gps on your dash. has a tacky, non-slip underside. works great and gps is ay eye-level, not unsafely low as in factory gps in e-series.

a few weeks ago i got a post card from MB in the mail. Said new Navigation is available at the dealership for $249. I'm thinking about getting it, since the county i live in has developed so much in the last 3/4 years (car is 2006) and i could really use the directions to get to the restaurants/etc.
Yes i can get a garmin/tom tom, but don't like the look of it stuck to my windshield. If the MB Nav Update will give me all the new roads/locations, i will get it.

Will the new DVD let you navigate to the exact house number ?
Have a 2008 W211 and the navigation currently only lets us select a range of house numbers here in NJ
Appreciate if someone can confirm if this is possible now, or should I invest $75 in a TomTom map upgrade instead...

I get around the house number issue by getting the coordinates from Google Earth for my destinations. I then add the destination via the coordinates and it takes me right there. Works like a champ. '06 E350

I went to the Navteq website, as per message above, and twice put the upgrade disk into the shopping Cart. Both times I clicked on the item to check it, and it had changed from 2006 E350 to C class. I deleted the item. Then I finished reading this thread, and had an Aha! moment. Truly, the MB Nav system isn't really very good. My $129 portable is better in many respects. Maybe it's kind of dumb to spend almost $300 on an upgrade to nowhere. All this time I thought it was me, and I just didn't know how to use the COMAND system. I partly blamed it on the instructions, which are pretty murky. I think I have to agree that MB gas bobbled the ball with this. Two of the really frustrating issues are losing the names of the roads when you expand your field of view from the highest magnification, and not being able to specify a street address. BTW, another work around for the street address issue is to try to locate where you want to go on the map. My daughter lives on one end of a street that is divided by a ravine. The street has the same name on both sides of the divide, and the street numbers progress normally. The COMAND system will only take me to the end of the street on the other side of the divide from my daughter's house. On the plus side, it always seems to show you where you are, in case you don't know, and it's quite attractive. It is also unlikely that someone will steal this from your car. When you stick a Garmin to your windshield it leaves a circle on the window, which can let the crafty thief know that you might have a portable in your car, why not break a window and see. If you use the bean bag approach, you have to secure all your gear every time you leave the car. I guess the best approach may be, as suggested above, to use both your COMAND system and a good portable on a trip. I guess I won't buy the upgrade disk after all.

You are too kind to MB
TThis is not simply a case of they don't care. If they did not care, they simply would not bother with putting any GPS in the car. This is contempt for the customer in that they charge the customer extra, and not a couple of bucks extra, to put in a GPS that is, in fact, little better than a joke and so far below the standard set by the cheapest add-on GPS that the joke is not even remotely funny. Contempt for the customer and arrogance is what it is. Shame on MB!

What happens with cars and products sold on a mass basis is that people don't always have "perfect" information, so not everyone always knows what the MBUSA navigation system is all about before they buy a car. And by the actual circumstances of individuals continuing to complain about the navigation system, I would tend to say that MBUSA sells the car and doesn't really care about the navigation aspect. They ride (pun intended) on the laurels of the quality of other aspects of the car and realize that most people will put up with a really terrible navigation system because of the MB name. It is one aspect of my 2007 E350 wagon which I have had a hard time accepting. I simply don't use it, and when I have turned to it, I have regretted it. I try to be positive about things, but this is probably the only thing that has really bugged me about it, so I have a hard time not relating it. I did so about one and a half years ago, and I found it curious but not surprising that it still remains a problem for what appears to be a good number of people. I wish MBUSA would own up to the problem and indeed truly and dedicatedly correct it.

Clever workaround
You are clearly more intellegent than the clowns MB hired to design their GPS system. Your workaround does nothing, unfortunately, for the (common) moments when you simply go off the map and end up with just an arrow pointing in the direction you are supposed to go and there is no indication of ANY roads...even the 30+ year old major ones.
Shame on MB!
