Check Engine light HELP!

Alright well it's a ****ty rainy day here in NYC, went out to L.I. and within 5 minutes of starting the car and leaving the house the CHECK ENGINE light came on. Car drives/feels fine. I drove in traffic the whole way then when I go to my destination I called my local MBZ service, they said it might be a minor faulty bulb or a loose gas cap. I took the gas cap out and retightened it, but haven't gotten a chance to drive it yet to see if it went away. I knew someone who has a ML320 and had the same issue with the gas cap, but we'll see.

Anyhow, is there anyway to OBD read without a scanner? I know in my 02' Dakota I don't need a scanner to check computer codes, it's just a simple key trick. Tried it on the Merc but no luck, anything?

Nope, need a scanner. Just go down to your local AutoZone. They'll hook theirs up for free and give you the fault code.

300E a couple 1994 w124wagon E320 Wagon/,1971MGB Track/Rally, MG Midget Autocross ,2000 E320 wagon.
It won't be

a faulty bulb.
Get the code per above or if you want to diy get a scanner for your tool box. They are only 50 bucks at www.harborfreigt.com
It can be a loose cap(emissions system leak)
or a maf related code or if you have 100k miles on the car or more an oxygen sensor related code. You won't feel a lot of them but that does not mean they are not affecting performance or if ignored won't toast a cat converter.
Get the codes and post them. Do not go to the dealer,it can be resolved here.

Well damnit lol. On my lunch break I went to start the car and it was dead, and would not start, but just crank. A friend of mine had the power outlet-power outlet jumper thing and I did that and it worked. It now starts/runs perfectly fine but there is still a check engine light. I went to the dealer and made an appointment for monday morning and they'll give me a loaner car.

What should I do?

your car is under warranty. Let the dealer take care of the problem.

That's what I though, plus that dealer is INCREDIBLE. And don't mind driving a free car

The car has stored the fault. The only code that I know of that "heals" itself is the gas cap. It takes a number of ignition cycles for the ECU to remove that problem so in your case that sounds doubtful. As others have mentioned, OBDII scanners are really reasonable. I purchased one for $40 at Costco. They allow you to clear codes but the car will re- post them if the problem is chronic. If you are really into it, you can get a cable and program for your laptop that provides complete information. The problem will likely return. I would find a scanner and get hard info.

Yea drove the car today, no light. Not sure what the hell that was about. My feeling was a dead battery, and it recharged itself since I've been driving.

Get the codes read and post them here -- like Clinton mentioned, there are several emissions sub-systems that need 2-3 drive cycles before the light comes on/goes out. The EVAP system typically needs 2-3 drive cycles to test with additional conditions (i.e., 15-85% gas in tank) before it will test. The EGR system is another that requires multiple drive cycles.

Regards,
paul...

Honestly, I don't want to bother with it. It's under warranty and I get a loaner C-Class so who cares. I'm brining it in in 4 hours. I'll find out later tonight or tomorrow what the situation is.

Alright well, to wrap it up:

-I got a 08 C300 4matic sport loaner, black/black, was a great car. I was impressed.

-I paid $0 for service, all under warranty. I ended up giving the worker $5 tip, and put $17 gas in the loaner (I drove it a lot)

-Dealer treated me GREAT, beautiful place & great people.

-They replaced and adjusted crankshaft sensor
-They replaced intake cam solenoid (forget which side)
-They left my battery on a charger overnight

Car is 100% tip top and I noticed it feels a bit more powerful, or peppy

Camshaft hall effect sensor. Don't know how you adjust a bolt on part? If it was adjusted my guess it is defective and you need a new one. Total failure will park the car.
