Overinflated tyres & MPGs
Just realized that when I had new Pilot Exaltos fitted at BJs, they over inflated the tires by more than 8 psi past the maximum - and it's been like this since the end of summer.
Explains the mileage I got on a trip from Washington DC to Atlanta just after Labour day...more than 500 miles later.

I would say that 37MPG at 65mph over 500 miles is about average. I have done 41+ with a 06 E320 CDI on an interstate trip with one stop over a distance of 260 miles at approximately 65 mph. I run my tires at 29 front and 33 rear which is the recommendation for high speed. That give goed handling and not such a harsh ride that over inflation will give and probably poor tire wear.

Our 2003 E500 gets combined city/hwy 19.5 and on the highway flat land steady cruise 25.7 mpg.
We owned the car since new and it now has 93,000 these mileage numbers are correct for our car and driving habits.
If you are getting 22 on the hwy you have an issue.
Are you running fuel with alcohol? This can cause a drop of up to 10% in mpg.
Octane might also be an issue we run only 93 octane top tier fuel.
We run our tire pressure on Michelin PS2's at 32 all 4 tires.

I get 25MPG in stop and go. About 35-38MPG at 80MPH. For reasons not clear to me, my mileage doesn't drop much until I go >80MPH. I had a strech of 100 miles where I averaged 93MPG and I still got 33MPH.

Yes driving style could be a factor but when i first got the car i was baby'ing it around town and it still was quite high.
I'll change fuel and then see again. Do you use 93 octane because thats the highest you can get there or it is most suitable ?

In both of my 2009 E350 RWD Sport, I maintain my tires at 29.4psi / 34.4psi, which is 1.4psi above the recommended limit for <80mph driving, but very close to the recommended limit for >80mph. I have found that is the perfect balance between ride comfort and sportiness/firmness for me. As for gasoline, unfortunately for us in CA, we only have 91 octane, and most pumping stations have up to 10% ethanol in their gasoline.
That being said, to give others a frame of reference, I found that when I'm driving my 2009 E350 RWD around in the city, my mpg can vary between <=13mpg (for very aggressive driving/starts/stops all the time), to ~17mpg (my "normal" driving style), to 22mpg (extremely conservative, coasting most of the time).
For highway, my mpg can vary between <17mpg (very aggressive), to ~21-23mpg (my "normal" driving style), to 29+mpg (extremely conservative driving for around 65 miles... but I've never made it past 65 miles since I have a tendency to punch it to pass slower cars once in a while).

The difference between mpg's could be due to different octane ratings in premium fuels, or different % ethanol/alcohol mix, or different driving styles, or different environment (maybe you have more/less traffic lights, or usually commute less/more miles than I do on the city/highway, etc). Maybe it's all of the above!

ok tried again but on freeway and reset while moving ... got 26mpg (9l/100km).
So i guess i should keep an eye on my driving habits and try a different fuel.

E350 RWD = 17 city / 24 hwy / 19 combined
E350 4MATIC = 16 city / 22 hwy / 18 combined
E550 RWD = 15 city / 22 hwy / 17 combined
E550 4MATIC = 13 city / 19 hwy / 16 combined
Thus I would imagine the E500 would fall closer to the E550 than E350. Also keep in mind that MPG also differs with speed as well, so your 26 MPG is for that particular speed... go any faster or slower, and you'll get a different MPG.

I get 20 Hwy and 13 city around 16.5 combined
Thats normal drive... if I drive bad... city could be less than 10MPG

Even when I put my foot to the floor, performance is great and I never hear any pinging. I'm sure the computer is retarding the timing somewhat in certain conditions and I'm losing some peak horsepower but I've not noticed a change in MPG.
