the Bronze Star Medal with VALOR is the 4th highest combat award awarded for "Heroic or Meritorious Achievement during combat" and is behind the top three, the Silver Star, Distinguished Service Cross and the Medal of Honor.
My big deal was i was the driver of the third and last HMMWV (humvee) and we started accelerating trying to get to 30mph and i got up to about 6 or 7 mph and i hear my gunner yell "o ****!" and pulls himself inside the back and im looking up at the turret like "wtf?" and then 2 big "THUD THUD!" 2 insurgents each threw one RKG-3 Anti-Tank Grenades with the copper ball thats inside the grenade. it blows up on impact heating the copper lined ball and the copper shoots inside so fast and so hot it annihilates anything in its path. the ball came behind my right leg, burned 70% of my right calf, and slammed through my left shin, at my boot line. i started yelling "ive been hit, i can't feel my legs, ive been hit in my legs" while looking at my squad leader, who was trying to radio the first 2 trucks. our radios had been hit by the second RKG-3 and we had no communication. my squad leader passes out, and i look directly in front of me at the first 2 trucks, and at this point because we were all accelerating and all of a sudden we came to a stand still they gained a distance of 200 meters on us. I couldn't feel or move my legs mid thigh down, and felt like they were burning hot like on fire. I managed to think "i gotta get outta here i gotta get outta here" and i picked up my right foot with my hands and placed my heel on the accelerator and pushed down on my knee with my hand and the truck started moving. i kept going clipping the curb and everything i didn't give a f*ck, i was just trying to get outta there. i caught up to the first 2 trucks and i started honking the horn, my buddy was in the gun of the second truck, he said he didn't hear the horn he just happened to look back and see us messed up and blood all over the windows. they turned around and i pulled the air brake, and applied my own turnoquet (sp?) on my left limb to stop the bleeding. that saved my life. and me continuing to drive saved the lives of the other three boys in the truck and thats what im really thankful for... and my merc, im also thankful for that! lol
