Has anyone gone with an aftermarket sound system?

I doubt that too many buyers of this type of car would want to. The HK system is great and the specific custom size and connections between the various components would present a huge challenge, probably impossible to do it and have it look right.

When I was ordering my E55 I had a listen to the HK system and was not particularly impressed as a result of which I did not order it. Likewise ordering the DVD Comand was not a option in the UK as they were not taking pre-orders.
So in my quest to improve the soundsystem and add a entertainment system for the kids I decided to add a Rear entertainment package. So I have Added a DVD changer (alpine), Playstation and TV tunner with 2 Savv Monitors in the Headrests and infra red headphones. While doing the install I discovered that the headuint is not as advanced as I had been told. The headuint is just a controller with the main box(Amp section) in the rear left Trunck well(very well hidden I might add). The car was prewired with 4 speakers in the doors(components) a Sub and a center channel. The standard amp outputs are speaker level outputs like the Old Comand and audio units.
So I have added line level converters on these speaker outs and added a PG Titanium 900.7 amp (7 Channel), upgraded the speakers to Boston Pro's added extra phantom tweeters in the front, replaced the factory sub with a 12" Panasonic flat sub and added a Audiovox A/V splitter with controllers inbedded in the front seatbacks such that the kids can select the source they want to listen to.
I would imagine after doing this upgrade that retrofitting the DVD comand would not be as difficult as the dealers in the US are making out. It would apper to me to be a case of adding the new headunit, adding the nav/TV section in the boot and running the relevant cables. I seem to remember Merc dealers making a big thing out of retrofitting the old comand and that is now availble as a retrofit. Having said all this do not try this if you are not sure, also if you do decide to get a installer to do this for you make sure that they know what they are doing and have a lots of money ready because it will cost you a arm and a leg.
