Question Weird issue with accelerator

2003 E320

I have noticed in a couple of unique circumstances, that the accelerator pedal essentially falls asleep.

The scenario is when I am cruising at highway speed, and rapidly jam the pedal to the floor to get around a car or make a quick lane switch. All good.

But, when I slow back down, the pedal is non responsive. I can only accelarate back up very very slowly by pressing the pedal to the floor and slowly letting the rpms climb back up to around 2100 at which point it picks up and goes. And, as soon as I turn the car off and restart, it's as if nothing ever happened.

And it only happens when I absolutely stomp the gas.

Am I not supposed to "absolutely stomp the gas?"

Sounds to me like the car isn't downshifting as you expect. Did you try using the "manual" transmission?

Hmmm After you manouver are you letting your foot completely off the pedal and then pressing it again?

I think you might need your tranny software updated. From what you've described it sounds that the transmission is not downshifting when needed. I'm not sure if the 2003 cars have this feature or not but if you hold the shift lever to the left the engine will downshift to a lower gear that will give you the most amount of torque. The manual says this is useful when planning to make a quick pass. Check your manual and see if your car supports this, if it does see if it works. But I'd definitely get it checked out by a dealer. Also, the reason why you are starting to pick up more speed at 2,000 RPM is because that is where the torque curve starts for the V6 engine. It is between 2,000 and 5,000 RPM where you get the most torque from the MB V6.

After I posted I saw another thread which is eerily similar to yours.

If you've got cruise control on, car is using brakes to return to set speed. Pedal does nothing while brakes are activated.

Thanks for the link.

It's happened both with cruise and without. Probably 3 times in the 2 years I've owned the car.

In last nights case, the guy in front of me slowed waaay down for no reason, so I slammed the gas and swerved left to pass. Car downshifted gave me plenty of ponies, and away I went. Left off the gas to coast back down to the speed limit, and everything seemed cool. Put the foot on the gas to maintain speed and NADA. Every the manual shift gave me nothing to work with. Rolled up on a stop light, downshiftyed manually, but even in 1 I have no power until 2100.

Killed the engine and restarted, good as gold.

Gotta be a software update or the valve discussed in the link.

I had this happen to me once in my 05 e320 4matic, dealer stated it was a software issue, and they went ahead and updated it.
