A/C stopped working

Haven't used A/C for a long while (winter), and it won't turn on today. Press the A/C off button, it flashed a few times then stayed on.

Did a quick search, and found a couple of similar cases, but there is no updates on the solutions.

Is there a way that one can force the A/C on ? or some other ways to tell whether it is sensor related or freon charge ?

I haven't experienced this problem on the E class, but have worked on the same issue in the 2000 C-class. When the freon is low, the A/C system won't turn on, but the fan and heat still work fine. You can buy a pressure gauge for $10 from any auto store and check the freon pressure by connecting the gauge to the charging valve (in the engine bay). If it's low, just charge the system w/ freon; that also means there's a leak in the system.

Thanks, Mackhack and SZMB. Mine is out of warranty. Should I go to a dealer or a generic mechanics ? only dealer has SDS capability ?

I have one and some other members have one as well. If you update your information (by clicking on User CP on top of the forum) we would know where you're from )

I won't take it to just any mechanic. You should take it to a well-known good MB mechanic in your area. Check online for mechanic reviews in your area. I used yelp.com for some of the reviews. You can charge the freon for temporary use (it's an easy job), but if there's a leak, which seems likely, you should get it fixed anyway.
