Electronic Trunk Closer - Open and Close Speed

For those with this option, how fast do the trunk open and close?

On mine, when it opens, it seems like a manual open where the latch releases and the trunk lid springs open to its max height.

On closing, I sear it will take my head/arm off if I am not fast enough.

Is this behavior normal?

Yes, when you open it just opens like you manually unlatched it. Its not "power open"

On closing its not ridiculously fast, but I don't push the button and wait around .. it does about 10 degrees at a normal speed and then it picks up the speed to close properly .. its definitely what I would describe as "power close"

Thanks. I thought I've seen other trunks (not an MB) close in a more controlled manner, kind of like some auto open/close minivan side doors. Just wanted to confirm our cars' behavior.

Typical time to close the trunk is approximately 3 seconds if close time is less control module may need replacement. Check your email.

Yup 3 seconds sounds about right.

Is the 3 seconds from open position to close position? I timed mine and it is 2 seconds from open to close. Then, I hear the locking motor "buzz" for another second.

Your CL uses a hydrolic actuator to open/close---works much slower and smoother---

The E uses an electronic motor---much quicker---

If the trunk is slamming shut (rapidly) you have an issue. As previously mentioned, may be an issue with control unit. Really is an issue than should be remedied, continued use can cause damage to trunk arm and/or actuator requiring replacement ($$labor$$)....

Well my E55 trunk used to open in a controlled manner. Nice and slow. The same with it closing. Now it is almost double the original speed and am trying to figure out why.

Power trunk very fast on closing. Brought to MB under warranty a few months ago they said it was ok. Had car checked recently did not mention trunk. Service said it closed much to fast and wanted to do a $1000+ repair. Told them I complained when under warranty and asked them to check their records. Needless to say the claim was denied now that car out of warranty.

If that is the case and it's stated on one of your invoices that you complained and they said it's ok then you should start complaining about it. If they didn't know what is the correct function and now deny it you should get it fixed for free regardless. They should pay that out of their pocket b/c it's their fault now. Would they have fixed it before while it was still under warranty MBUSA would have paid the bill I would assume. Try it and if needed change dealership.

I did that too b/c they never tried to work with me or even messed up stuff that was perfectly fine just to sell me more stuff and I found a dealership which works WITH me not AGAINST me.

Did anyone find a solution to this problem?
My trunk slams so hard when it closes, it's pretty embarrassing if people are around.

I am bumping this since i am wondering what else controls the speed of the trunk opening and closing. I replaced the "potentiometer" (A2118201597) which attaches to the motor lever arm and it didn't change anything. Thought maybe it sent a signal to the motor for the trunk hinge position to control speed but apparently not. No codes stored either. Still closes and opens way too fast. I don't use my trunk often but when i do, i'd prefer it to close like it did when i bought the car. Thanks.

This the part i am going to try next since the dealer nor my indy know what could be wrong and for some odd reason thinks it is normal when i know it is not. Just seeing if anyone has experienced this and actually fixed it so i am not continuously throwing money at this trunk issue.

Apparently the trunk module goes bad, resulting in the super fast trunk closing speed.

You need to replace your current trunk module to the following revised part to restore the original factory trunk closing speed:
Code:
2118703026
You should be able to find the revised trunk module on eBay with this part no. (See original DTB PDF attached below.)

Hope this helps!

Thanks alot for some sort of confirmation. The part is not cheap by any means and didn't want to buy one just to try. That potentiometer wasn't cheap, but i guess i have a spare now. Although i don't think there are many components left other than the motor, which obviously works if it is moving the trunk up and down. I will go ahead and order one and report back for any future people who has this issue. Seems most of the threads i have found from the past no one ever seemed to get it fixed. Thanks again.

WIS document states if speed is not within 2 seconds it might get replaced for free at a dealership under warranty.

I assume that is if the factory warranty is still in effect. I will call them though to see since the worst they can tell me is "No".

The problem i saw on other threads of the dealer denying work, was because the speed was within that time frame. Although it may be half that time, it was still within the given parameters. Like someone else mentioned, it's like it wants to chop your hands or head off when pushing that close button

I usually solve these issues if out of warranty by stopping by my SA with a 12 pack of beer for the mechanic. Never failed but perhaps it is because of excellent relationship with the dealer over the years.

Opening is normal - closing speed is not. My 2004 E500 developed this problem when it was still still covered under the (new car) 7 year extended warranty so I took it to the dealer. I believe they replaced something, but whatever they did fixed the problem - at least the trunk lid stopped acting like a guillotine and went back to a normal closing speed. The car is long gone and I no longer have the paperwork so I can't tell you what they did.

Ok, i am glad to report back that my trunk opens and closes at the speed of which it did previously. I originally hooked up the STAR system to it to reset the trunk values and "re-code" it per its instructions, which did not work. So i purchased the updated part number for the trunk control module, #2118703026, and upon the initial install, the trunk wouldn't even work. Hooked STAR back up to the car, went through the "re-coding" procedures, and all is back to normal.

I also want to add, that if you don't fix the fast opening and slamming of the trunk, it will eventually break the mounting bracket on the trunk hinge that the trunk motor arm attaches to. My bracket was pretty much busted so i went ahead and installed a new trunk hinge to prevent further issues later. Which was an absolute ***** to do. Someone must know what the easy way is to remove the rear shelf trim?

Well, hopefully this helps someone else at some point.

Aaron,

Send me your email address and ill send you WIS document that shows how I remove the hut shelf! It's a ***** that just up front. Especially if someone broke the latches that release the rear head rests!!! Took me 6 hours to just get them off bc a mechanic broke off all three release latches on my car a few years ago (and of course never bothered to tell me that they broke something)!!!
