vettdvr,

Do you know if the newer 350/550 engines have variable cam timing for the exhaust cams? If so, that may be the component he's talking about and not the CMP sensor. Other OEMs have solenoids that cause the intake and exhaust cams to vary their timing as commanded by the PCM and also have the CMP.

Regards,
paul...

There are 4 sensors/soleniods (part desciption is "magnet") on front of cyl header of 272/273 engine. Part is cheap. Labor should be about and hour total time (diag included).

Paul don't know about MB VVT, but I have been reading how crysler and GM do it. Oil pressure controls the shift of the cam when the PCM sends signal. Didn't look at the electrical component to see what type.

Off fishing today with kids. 5, 3, 1 should be interesting day. We have to stay inshore due to the oil in the gulf so we will be inland away from the oil which continues to spill out.

turns out the dealer did it for free as part of the 30 warranty. So far, in the last 30 days, they've put on new rotors and pads front and back (genuine merc parts) new pass side headlight assembly and took care and a new exhaust camshaft adjuster. I'm guessing that all would have been $1500 - $2,000 bucks. Sound about right?

Be sure to thank your dealer for his support and remember him next time you buy a car. It is service and sale that makes a good dealer not just a low price car sale. Sometimes I will not pay lowest price on a car if the service is top tier.
