Unhappy Performance/oil change question.

Hi folks. I did my oil change (self) service a while ago and reset the FSS.

It has been at least 6-7 months and car feels a bit heavy like you feel when oil change is due. The FSS tells me service C due in 4500 miles. oil level is Full. I don't know of any way to find out the quality of the oil in the bay.

I dont drive hard - just 17 miles to and back from office on hiway.

Should I just follow the service indicator or change the oil? 6-7 months is a gueeestimate as I do not remember when I did the damned oil change. It has been at least 5-7K miles since.

Oh I forgot. 2004 E320 - Mobil-1 syn with autozone w211 generic filter.

Change the oil once a year or every 9k/10k mi. I just changed the valve cover gaskets on the 2004 CLK320 w/ 90k mi and oil change interval has been 9k mi using Mobil-1. All mecanical parts are clean and shinng and no sludge build up.

Sounds good. I am sure its right around 9K mile mark. This time I will write down the milage and date as well for personal record.

SZMB - do you use genuine filter? I always buy from autozone - do you think they are as good as the OEM? (last 9-10K mi)

Just make sure the oil filters are made to peformed and last up to 10k miles. Many generic oil filters are not made to last that long.

I buy the genuine O.E. Mann filters (extended service version) from autohausaz.com. I buy a few at a time for a total of more than $50 to get the free ground shipping.
I've used Wix Filter once on the E500 and it worked fine.
But I do have a horror story to tell. One of my friends at one time took his E500 to a local oil changer to have the oil changed. After about 2k mi, I was curious on the type of oil filter that the local shop used. I removed the oil filter cap and inspected the oil filter. The generic filter was made in China, as I moved my finger across the filter paper to get a feel of the paper quality, the filter paper just craumbled and fell apart. My friend was horrified but happy that I did the inspection, otherwise, that filter could had been disintegrated in a few more hundred miles.

I checked the Autozone Filter don't remember the brand but it has the MANN stamp inside and is identical to the MB filter. It is however a premo price at AZ but I believe it is a Mann filter in the box.

It should be quite simple to determind if it a MANN or not, MB filter are by easy to tell if it quality or not because it does not used a canister around the filter like most cars uses which in my theory the filter should be way cheaper (but it is not). It funny how many different manufactures uses different names but in the end uses the same brand of quality and materials.

Yup your right. The AZ filter was identical to the MANN I took out of my box.

Down to the label. (Note this was not a duralast but another premo brand they had)

I also saw at AAP that the Purolator filter they sell for the W211 is the fleece filter with "Mann" stamped on the end. I wonder if Wix has done the same thing.

If this is a big concern for you, then you can siphon out a few ounces of oil thru the dipstick tube and send it out for analysis so you can get confirmation of the oil quality.

BTW, a few years back on this forum, another member and I compared our used oil analyses -- he changed his oil at 7500 miles and I did mine at 14.5K miles (when FSS told me to) and our analyses were almost identical.

paul....

Paul that is what I think. I believe they are just buying from MANN in bulk repackage and sell under their name. This way they can still claim meeting warranty requirments. I have no problem buying the one from AZ with the MANN filter in the box. Prices are about the same as ordering but I can just walk in and pick it up vs having to order serveral and put on the shelf.

Happy Flying.

What is AAP? So Wix and Purolator can be trusted?

At this point in time, I am not happy as the engine feels heavy and am going to change the oil anyway. I just returned from a 3 week vacation and maybe am not used to the car any more but thats how I felt (heavy durig acceleration)

(1) AAP = Advance Auto Parts (sorry that I didn't spell it out).
(2) Can only be trusted if their filters ARE the MB OEM fleece filters -- you'll need to open the boxes and check who makes them.
