Abysmal economy figures and other issues...

Hi all,
I see lot of posts with you "big block" (lucky) guys and your economy figures.
I'm getting, on a (very, very)good day, 11/23 mpg...FROM MY POKEY 2.6 V6...!!!!

I sent her to the Stealer as I had the SBC issue and a lot of play and noise from my steering column. Well, they refused to honor or even consider the extended warranty issue with the bloody pump, so I had to pay $3,000 (equivalent) for the steering box and SBC pump plus the usual service fleecing. Oh, and the engine/gearbox mounts.

She runs very smooth, but the eco figures are bleeding me dry. We pay $5 (equivalent..again) per gallon and traffic that would make you suicidal!

The only engine mods are K&N filters and the AMG back boxes..

What could be the cause of this? I'm quite sure this is NOT normal...?

The SBC pump issue is supposed to be extended for 10 years and unlimited mileage. At least in the USA.

Average miles per gallon over one year and 6000 miles of mixed driving,
15.6 MPG with a V-8 powered, E-500 Wagon.
Pretty much what I expected and glad fuel is cheap here in the US of A.

It has a lot to do w/ the newer 5.5L V8 and the 7spd transmission than anything else.

On the highway, if I drive at 60-65 for hundreds of miles, I've avg'd almost 28.

On the streets I can drive like an @ss and get just 12.

But yeah, the newer transmission and the newer engines from MB are amazing.

Wait till the new "AMG" engine comes out .. I think its a 4.8L Twin Turbo .. it has more HP and more torque than the 6.3L V8 and gets 30% better mileage.

Check tire pressure.

Your driving style has A LOT to do with it.

Do you have a "C" or "S" mode? Are you driving in "S" mode? Drive in "C" mode.

Sound advice.

Also, I don't know if it'll help or not, but you could try resetting your adaptive throttle and then re-train it to be more conservative (search "ECU Reset" in these forums). I improved my average MPG in one of my cars by about 2 MPG doing this...

Tire pressure is just about bearable for the disgusting road conditions and low profile 19's.
I have a S/W button..tried them both..no real difference.

Chokaay, how does one do the ECU reset? I know about the TCU one...

19's will also reduce your economy versus the stock wheels I believe.

"W" should start the car in 2nd gear everytime versus "S" which will start it in 1st gear. "W" should result in better mileage .. I'm assuming thats the same as C/S mode in my car.

Get rid of your K and N filter. Its possible that it has deposited some of its oil on some sensors which are causing it to run rich but not enough to trigger the CEL. Put the std filter back on and see what happens.

1. Turn the ignition key to the on (not start) position.

2. Press the gas pedal to the floor and hold for five seconds.

3. Turn the key to the "off" position (don't remove the key), then release the gas pedal.

4. Wait at least two minutes for ECU to reset.
