I know some of the SL600 guys have removed their mufflers and run straight pipes but, was curious if anyone with an E500 had done this and how it sounds. I cringe at the thought at not running mufflers on a Mercedes but, with all the catalytic converters and noise reducers prior to the mufflers, this might allow for a V8 sound. I have friends with the AMG mufflers and others that don't seem to make a throaty sound considering how much money they spent.

Thanks,
Todd

I have an '04 Cobra for that... I just want it to sound like it has a V8 and not be so quiet... I listened to a few video's on youtube and no mufflers does not sound like what I want...

the SL600 and the other turbo'd cars probably arent as loud with straight pipes because the turbos muffle some of the sound, but just imagine how loud the Terminator will sound with no mufflers, Id bet the e500 will sound similar as the engine is bigger in the turbo... we tried it on a 03 Roush, and the coins were jumping out of the cupholders on a Rev,
you probably dont have LTs or anything on the E, but it will still be unbearable, maybe try something more custom, start with straight pipes and high flow cats, then keep adding some custom mufflers till you get the sound you want...
Something like these maybe?

moosez3 - you make a good point about the turbo's muffling the sound and that is probably why those cars seem to sound pretty good without mufflers. I have a deal with someone on a set of E55 mufflers but, if that falls through, I'll look to buy some aftermarket mufflers and have the shop fab up some nice tips to see if we can get a V8 sound that isn't deafening...

My Cobra has that SLP loud mouth exhaust, BBK LT's and BBK catless mid pipe. In addition to the Kenne Bell blower, it will wake the dead when you get on it. I don't want that kind of noise coming out of my DD('05 E500) but, would like to hear a little of that V8.

Thanks again,
Todd

I've experienced the sound a lot from a W220 S500 (same motor, longer piping).

It'll sound like a "Boat" if you know what I mean, and it'll definitely sound like a V8. Lots of gurgling, some deceleration "popping" due to no mufflers eliminating those sounds, loss of low end Torque. It'll more or less sound like a muscle car, with some rasp.

I had straight pipes on my old Mustang GT too, sounded MEAN.

Don't do it, it'll sound terrible. I'm one of the SL600 guys that runs with no mufflers. This is because MB, in their infinite wisdom, has made the turbos part of the exhaust manifolds. The turbos actually act as pseudo mufflers, but you'll get no such help on your E500.

When I was doing exhaust work on my E500, I started the car up with no mufflers, just for fun. Everything in the cockpit rattled, and the car sounded like ***.

There's no way to get real grunt out of these cars. I've tried everything. My best results were with headers, 2nd cats removed, removed resonator and replaced with x-pipe, and added E55 AMG mufflers.

Here's what it sounds like:

I'v heard an e500 with secondary cat removed , x pipe, with and without mags...both sound amazing.

Im currently on a same exact mag setup on a 350 and it still has a little gurgle to it.I was amazed.Regardless your gonna hear drone but thats the price the pay..Welll worth

I also tried straight pipes to mags with no secondary cats and sounded like poopoo..so make sure u x pipe it evens out the air flow
