do I need to worry about the burst of smoke emitting from my tail pipe

I've just realized, sometimes when I pass another car, I can see a burst of smoke coming out of my CDI tail pipe in my rear view mirror. It doesn't happen every time. Perhaps, only when the turbo kicks in? Should I be worried? Thanks!

I think that your car has a defect.
But I am not able to tell you which parts gone defective.

- Injector
- Turbo
- Filter in exhaust pipe
- ....

Maybe your dealer can tell you more.

It perfectly normal for our US CDI's to belch smoke when pushed. I can get mine to really create a smoke screen. Mostly noticeable at night with the headlights from behind, however, its also visible during daylight. I will say, that I get more smoke from my 2006 than I did from my 1997. As long as its black or grey you are fine, white and blue are bad

Exactly like you said, I only noticed it at night with the headlights or traffic lights shining from behind. It's like the octopus defense mechanism (which ejects a thick black cloud of ink and run). Since I only notice it at night, can't tell what color the smoke is.... Thanks!

Please do not compare old diesel engines without turbo with modern engines with turbo, direct incection with high pressues and optimized filer techniques.

My car doesn´t smoke in the rear, even if I push it.

So, do anyone know if the filter in the exhaust is another one for the us-market? I have never seen a smoking diesel here in germany if there was a modern filter (original equipment).

I heard that california has one of the strongest laws worldwide belonging pollution. Why is ist possible that your cars are smoking more than in europe?

2005 E320 CDI
I drive our 2005 CDI like an old man around town most of the time and when I give it a good boot it'll blow what I believe is a bunch of accumulated carbon out of the exhaust system but then not do it again til it's had a bunch more ******* around.
After an up to temperature workout with some good velocity gases going through it doesn't seem to do it.

As far as I know, 2005-2006 E320 US diesels do not have a filter on the exhaust (DPF).

Are we talking about the adblue filter? I don't think any US diesels have that.

The 07-09's have a particulate filter but no AdBlue Urea injection.

In can only speak for european cars.

All V6 Diesels have DPF-filters (also my car, Code 806)
In the R6 Diesels the DPF was optional in the model years 805 (and I think in 804 too).

I am talking about the standard DPF-filter - I am NOT talking about BlueTec techniques with additional injection an NOx-filter. The BlueTec V6 was sold in europe as 300CDI with less HP than the 320CDI (about 204HP - european HP !!!)

With the 05 & 06 CDI's blowing some smoke, I feel it is the diesel we in the USA it has low Cetane.
From what I have seen from 40 to 45 cetane, so it does not burn as clean.
Low sulfur diesel just introduced in 2007.
