Main battery Replacement

The front battery is an AGM type and spill-proof. In any case, the electrolyte is shipped in a separate container and you fill the battery prior to use. I bought one on ebay for about $70 not long ago. Turned out I did not yet need it. It sits, un-charged with electrolyte, in my work shop. Infinite shelf life that way.

Thanks for that info. I don't know if the diesel came with the SBC braking. If it does, are you concerned with the possibility of the SBC pump warranty not being valid because of not using the right battery? My experience with Mercedes is that they would welcome the opportunity to void a warranty.

Battery funny business
I don't get it.
But I am happy.

$150 installed by a MB service vehicle visit would be a screaming bargain. Since MB is not in the business of providing screaming bargains, I doubt that number. I've seen $350 mentioned by people who asked their local dealer. That sounds more like it. It may vary with the level of greed at your local dealer, though.
Think I'll call the local guys, just for grins.

I bought a main battery from the dealer last year and, with the diagnosis, it was just a touch above $400. I could not find a source for a replacement battery from anyone else in the area, and it was getting too cold to mess around.

Does NOT claim to be an AGM battery and, at that price, I STRONGLY doubt that it is. This is probably just a common sealed lead-acid battery and not a direct replacement for the original AGM battery. I think you can get an AGM in this size for $100, but you have to hunt for it. I got one on eBay last year (shipped with electrolyte in a separate container, which is what you want...indefinite shelf life).
If it was an AGM, they would point that out in the ad...it is a BIG selling point.
I hear there is no Santa Claus, either.

The info does state lead acid, which is why it can't be shipped. Also, wrong size and wrong terminals.
Here's a Deka AGM, $72.00 shipped : http://www.bohannonbattery.com/html/deka/etx14.html
Edit: What's that about Santa? You better be kidding!

The battery in the above link looks to be the correct size. When it is time to change the secondary battery, I will buy one like the above link (probably from where a buy my motorcycle batteries) and get an AGM so that I don't have to worry about filling it with water every couple of years. As far as the main AGM battery, I will probably try to get as close to the original one as possible. I can't believe that I have had these two batteries for just over 9 years now and they are still cranking and testing just fine!!!!

AGM batteries ARE lead acid batteries, they just have fiberglass porous mats to separate the lead plates and immobilize the electrolyte to make them essentially spill proof vs. conventional flooded lead acid batteries.

And yeah, I have it on good authority that there ain't no Santy Claus. I have also heard troubling rumors about the Easter Bunny.

If that's the white battery, it's not AGM, and that's the going price.
For those of you that want the Fiamm, oem aux battery : @ $159 delivered :
http://www.ebay.com/itm/MERCEDES-BEN...-/190716744381
or
@ $111.00 + shipping at an MB dealer: http://www.trademotion.com/parts/ind...xt=2115410001/
@nopcbs, Of course you're correct, however, common usage of "lead acid" batteries is generally accepted as non AGM.
You're killing me here, no Easter Bunny either.....a few weeks away and now I'm devasted !!

That Deka is a lead acid battery, too.

It cost me about $65 + tax at autozone.

on point 3, I think you are wrong. Here is why. After I did the fuse block jumper position change (so that the cigar lighter is live at all times, allowing you to Battey Tender charge the main battery from the cigar lighter), I needed to get at the aux battery to put a seconf battery maintainer on it (winter storage). Out of curiosity (because I was not 100% sure that the one Battery Tender was not already charging the aux battery), I pulled the ground lead off the aux battery and put a voltmeter accross its two cables (so I was not reading the battery's voltage, but what was going into it). I read 0 volts.
At least with ignition off, the aux battery is getting no voltage. Now, I did not read across a chassis ground, so if MB did something really screwy and did not have the negative lead connected to chassis ground, the test does not disprove your point. This would be the first time I have ever seen a battery negative cable not grounded to chassis ground, however. On the other hand, this is MB and almost anything is possable.

My aux battery is original and now 9 years old. Your post got me curious, so I checked the voltage on the aux battery (car hasn't been driven in several months) a couple of days ago and it was 12.5V (maintainer disconnected-ignition off)
I then disconnected the aux battery and put a light bulb load on it until it dropped to 11.5V. Reconnected the aux battery and the maintainer on the main battery. Checked it a day later and it was back up to 12.5V
Strange, but it does appear that when charging the main battery, the aux battery is charged as well.

Just got a quote from my MB dealer here in Birmingham, AL to replace both front and rear batteries: $764 plus 9% tax = $832.76. They did not breakdown the cost of each.
Quote today to replace brakes: "FRONT BRAKE PADS AND ROTORS RUNS AROUND $700. REAR BRAKE PADS AND ROTORS RUNS ABOUT $650". With 9% tax added to this = "around" $1,471.50
I have 43,000 miles on my 6 year old E350. I will wait until I get some warning lights before proceeding. I am not a DIY guy on car repairs.

New battery Bosch from PebBoys about $130 and new aux battery from AZ is about $60. You could get all the work done brakes and batteries about $250 IF you do some of it yourself. If not they just pay the Mercedes Tax to the dealer.

Just bought a replacement Group 49 battery from local M-B dealer. New E350 battery p/n 000-982-33-08 was $193.05 without tax or labor. For comparison O'Reilly wanted $169.99 for a similar battery.

Just in case anyone find this useful, it is indeed cheaper to have roadside assistance replace your battery They don't charge you any labor while the Mercedes dealer does.
My battery is low and it is cheaper for road side assistance to come to my house and change the battery than to go to the Mercedes dealer... They are on their way and the AGM main battery is only about $240 when purchased through road side assistance.
