The M273 is based on the M113. What it has in common with the M272 V6 is 4-valves per cylinder (the M113 had 3), variable length intake runners, and variable valve timing.
The issue with the M272 appears to be related to balance shaft gears. Pretty sure that's unique to the V6 and not the same as the issue for M273 engines.
2012 and up get a new (M278) engine. Should be interesting to see if the M278 suffers the valve gunk problem seen in direct-injection engines from other manufacturers.

OK,here is another problem,I have an 06 E-350,which I suppose has the same gear problem.Another problem has come up,I am sure a goodly number have had an issue with the 5 or 7 speed trans conductor plate..which I discover MB will not sell the 7 speed plates to an independent garage,which I use.the 5 speed no problem.....MB is ruining their rep and trying to keep all the $$ inhouse,how do you get rid of a car with a bad rep........RS..love the car hate the hassle!

Any news on the class action suit? My engine is within range, and I am not sure how long I should keep the car. So far the car has been flawless, but I don't want to have a ticking time bomb like my old bimmer.
