I just banged mine out against the pavement and wall..... had rocks, dirt, leaves.. I've never seen such a dirty filter before actually......
I will replace the filter with a new one probably within the next 5k miles though....

I changed mine, bought them for $30 after shipping off ebay, they are OEM Mann filters. Car feels a bit peppier and gas mileage stays at 31+ on highway trips. Found a good price on spark plugs at www.rockauto.com @ 3.87 a plug so I'll do mine this weekend now that I'm almost at 100,000 miles so I can really make a difference.-E320 RWD

i put K&Ns in mine and could def tell a difference right away. Even the wifey noticed that the throttle response is quicker when she steps on the gas pedal:-)

Mine were completely cruded up with butterfly carcases and dirt galore. I swear my little transmission hickup in the morning (for the first mile or so) is gone. Maybe it was more that my engine was choking. Not sure why my dealer passed over changing out my filters last year, but it was an easy DIY and now I know how ugly these things can get.
