Question W211 aftermarket Xenon bulb replacement

I searched every where for this information and couldn't find any ...

I need to replace my factory D2S bi-xenon bulbs as one of them is turning pinkish.

Did anyone try to replace them with any aftermarket no-brand bulbs, I found a pair at HIDExtra for $29.99 http://www.hidextra.com/d2s-5000k-hid-bulb-1016

I called them and they told me they are 5K, 35W with 3600 lumins.

Would that be "OK" or it could damage the ballast or something else?

I don't want to save few bucks now and pay a lot later ...

Thank you guys for your help!!

The ballast should be able to power any hid bulb. The stock bulbs are probably 5000K. I would would go with the Phillips 85122CM (5000K), but they're a little pricey at about $180 a pair.

Thank you T-Mac!

I'm not trying to save few bucks here (though that wouldn't be a bad thing). I just got some H7 "6K" HID conversion kits from these guys a while ago and the bulbs didn't change colors, I heard the Phillips do that over time, so I was hoping their D2S bulbs wouldn't change color overtime, but I don't want to damage something else by using these no-brand bulbs.

Phillips does make bulbs that don't change color over time, but they're 4100k and are slightly yellow. Personally I don't like that look, but if you want them they are Phillips 85122.

Costco carries the Phillips 85122CM online so I'd look there.

I believe that is listed incorrectly. It's a standard 4300k (White) bulb. It's a great bulb that produces the most lumens.

This guy has multiple listing most of them are for the 4300K and on this one he stated it is 6000K ....

Now for the Philips 85122+, I thought that is the one with the yellowish color shade, right?

The Philips 85122+ is the 4300K bulb, it'll be white.

I'm thinking maybe I should buy a pair of these bulbs to have as standby spares if and when one of my lights go out... I have a 2007 E550 with the factory bi-xenon option. Can someone please confirm that these are the correct bulbs for my car?

Those will fit your car. So long as they are D2S bulbs.

I found this article comparing Philips 85122 to 85122+

http://www.8thcivic.com/forums/light...2-85122-a.html

85122-----
--More blueish
--4100K
--Look bright white in a projector such as TSX or S2K
--Will eventually turn blue as the bulb "dies"

85122+-----
--More whiteish
--4300K
--Almost have a yellowish tint in a projector such as TSX or S2K. Look like a "really bright halogen"
--Does not turn "blue" as the bulb dies.

I don't want to get a "really bright halogen" look ...

The 4100K bulb will have more of a yellow tint than the 4300K bulb. If you don't want the slight yellow tint just go with the 5000K bulbs. No point in comparing the other two, it's an easy decision!

Those are good bulbs too. But remember the higher you go in terms of kelvin temperature, the less bright the bulb gets. So the 6000k bulb will be less bright than the 4300k bulb.

I myself run 8000k bulbs and don't mind the light loss.

All this is making my head spin. What lights did my E550 come with from the factory with the bi-xenon option? I'm perfectly happy with those lights... Was it the 85122 or the 85122+?

fwiw, Mercedes is using Osram as their vendor for their latest bulbs beginning with the December 2011 production of W212s. The big difference is that they are now at 5000K and very white (and not "ricer blue") and with higher lumens (brightness.) The previous ones were around 4300K. The new ones now match BMW, Porsche, etc., in color temp and lumens. In other words, your HIDs will actually look good now.

Maybe ask your dealer for the Osram part # and then go online and shop. Otherwise get Phillips or any other comparable brand with a color temperature and lumens output that you can personally live with. It gets pretty subjective as to what you "should" be using. It's your personal choice in the end.

Press release from Daimler AG:

"Achieving light colour which is as close as possible to daylight is one of the biggest safety benefits in the field of headlamp technology. Mercedes-Benz is now one of the first automotive manufacturers to offer xenon headlamps boasting a significantly brighter light output.

From December, production of the E-Class and S-Class will make use of new xenon burners from the company Osram, featuring a colour temperature which has been increased by some 20 percent.

Achieving a figure of 5000 Kelvin, the new xenon light is even closer to daylight and is therefore even brighter – a clear innovation, in the true sense of the phrase.

This light colour is in keeping with normal human perception patterns, and as such conveys an impression of greater brightness to the eyes, thus reducing the strain on the driver. Studies have shown that the closer the colour of artificial light comes to daylight, the less the strain on the eyes. This is a crucial safety benefit, especially if we take into account that only 20 percent of journeys take place at night – yet it is when 40 percent of fatal accidents occur.

After the E-Class and the S-Class, further Mercedes-Benz model series will be gradually fitted with the new xenon burners in 2011. All previous Mercedes-Benz vehicles equipped with xenon headlamps can also be fitted with this additional safety feature, as the new xenon burners will be available from branches and dealers as Mercedes-Benz original parts."

Allow me to chime in,

The stock W211 bulbs are Philips 85122's they start out yellowish 4100k and keep going all the way until 4800k before they die, continually turning bluer as time passes. This is called colorshift.

A big misconception is that the 85122+ bulbs stay yellow'ish. This is not true.

First they WILL start out off-white with a yellow tint,

But then they will turn white and STAY white.

The after pic is still even more white than the photo shows, here is a ground shot. When you're driving and they reflect off the paint on other cars they will have a very VERY slight blue tint, most likely from the projectors

Check your VIN...you might have D1S bulbs, as I do. More expensive, has the igniter attached to the bulb. Very different from D2S.
