Question problems with 2003 e500?

drove new 2003 e500, was very impressed. car really goes, BUT need to know what problems exist with car, I presently dirive 2000 bmw 528. 5sp MT car. 193 hp. car handles and rides great.stops great. Engine makes too much
noise. I hear e500 may have problem with stabilty /handlling system, as follows swerve car left, then swerve car right both abruptly and car seems to loose it. Have not tried that yet. Also read about ticking sound from v-8 ?? Motor mounts. please advise, I'm not a troll .but do not want to trade into problems, offered $2000 off mspr/ dealer in Hartford CT. no car on ground as I want it, tia

I don't think $2000 off on MSRP is that attractive. Consider that the 2004 models are already in production and will be here in 2 months. That means this car will already be considered one year old very soon. A good deal would be a discount close to the depreciation of a one year old vehicle. If your dealer can't do better you might as well get a 2004 model.

You need to surf through all the treads. You can search for specific topics. I've never heard or seen of any stabilty /handlling system problems.

All "new" cars have some issues/problems, but they are being dealt with. This car is Great! Also remember, this forum only represents a small precentage of "E" owners and the issues/problems always seem to surface and all the good doesn't get the same press time.

Good Luck ..... Mark

To answer your question, the car handles great. There is NO problem with the swerving that you mentioned. The ticking is from the motor mounts, but no cars recently exhibit the flaw.

There are still airmatic issues that seem to occur randomly, but the longer you wait, odds are you can avoid such bad luck

The e class is turning out to be a sturdy car. Wait for the 2004 model if you have fears about first year glitches.

I don't know what to expect now. My dealer told me that the car is scheduled to be built at the end of July, but I am shopping around dealers to make sure I am still getting a good deal, and in talking with another dealer, they said they just got a fax from MBUSA saying 2004 E500's will start production in 9/03 (delivery mid Oct). I am tending not to believe my dealer with the July date because on the Netstar printout it showed 2003 and they had scratched it out and wrote in 2004 before faxing to me. Also, if you read last Thursday's autospies.com article, they talk about 2004 E500 production starting Sept. with the 7G transmission. Who knows.??

I myself went from a '99 BMW 528i like you (you had a 2000 so you probably had the full maintence package included, and the rain sensor wipers). I had the Sport/Premium on my car. I too was concerned that the E would be "boaty floaty" and not handle at all well. I had driven my in-laws E320 (it's a 98 or 99) from houston to austin and HATED IT!

All I can say is "THIS IS NOT YO' MAMAS BENZ BABY!!!"

The car handles EXTREMELY well. The turn in isn't quite as sharp as a Sport 528/530.. HOWEVER.. the 540 isn't as sharp either. I think the extra weight in the front (v8) has to do with that. That said.. I had all the confidence in this car that I had with my 528. The airmatic suspension is great. You can set for Sport 1 or 2 for "spirited driving" or to "Comfort" for driving around normally. It's like going from a non-sport 5 series to a Dinan Stage 2 setup with a button press. Sport 2 is a very tight ride... and very sharp handling too.

Take your pick =)
Peter

PS: The 5 series can't compete with the new E in terms of "luxury." Performance wise I think the gap has been closed by MB.

jyg so far i have driven my e 500 and everything really fine except when the first time i buy it, i have to change the engine mount but that's not a big problem.

I'm really satisfied with my car. i think you can do much better than $2000 of msrp because e55 is out already and there's a lot of new e class on the road, too. try to get 3500 to 3000 off msrp
