Fuel injection cleaner, Yes / NO ?
Hi guys,
So I have read some different things out there pros/cons, what is your opinions on the fuel injection cleaner that you can get various places and what is your experience with it, or should I stay away ?
I thought of buying some today but wanted your 2 cents to it first and if its worth which brand should I go with.
Thank you !

I have been using Lucas injector cleaner on every car I have owned in the last 5 years and never had a problem with the engine or inejctors, three MB and two BMW included in that list.

Its just fuel system cleaner. Does adding detergent booster to your wash make the clothes look new? No to that also.
It cleans stuff up a little. You'd have to have 1 or 2 injectors plugged and then cleared to "notice a difference" by the seat of your pants.
It just makes us feel better to pour a bottle of petrolium distillates into our tanks.

Been using this stuff for a while now, at least 15 years.
Most dealers use the BG products dispite the owners manual stating no additives necessary. I started using the Chevron Techron with techcroline and had good results and is easier to find and less expensive than BG.
Along time ago BMW had a problem with carbon build up on the valves, and they actually did a one time FREE cleaning by blasting crushed walnut shells to clean the surfaces. After that the recommended using a injection cleaner to maintain the cleaned valves. I have been using fuel injection cleaners in all my cars and motorcycles since that happened.
I notice better response and maybe 1-2 more MPG, i usually use it before a long drive (300-400 miles), but it seems to work in city driving too.
My last service the dealer recommended an Induction Service where they use some chemical (he wont say) to clean the entire system to the tune of $190. I passed on that offer...

f.i. cleaners
FWIW, I periodically used Chevron Techron cleaner in my type-993 Porsches because this series developed a reputation for clogging of the secondary air injection systems. I guess this may have helped to avoid SAI problems, but don't know for sure.
On the other hand, I recently sold our '04 Jag XJ with 183K miles (yikes!) in which I never used any f.i. additives, and it ran great...still delivered 30+mpg/hwy.
So my opinion is "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".

I've been using Techron, but never more than twice between oil changes, per the recommendations. However, of all places, Costco is now rolling out a Top Tier gas additive package, which they say equals Chevron and eliminates the need for Techron. Given the overall quality of a wide variety of their house branded products, I believe them, and have stopped adding Techron, which they said is now overkill. This new additive is not yet national, so they cannot advertise it generally, but there are signs at some of the roll-out participating stations, or ask the attendant.

Shell gas stations also use the same additives as Chevron Techron.
That being said I used a bottle of the stuff and did notice the engine was quieter after and might have squeezed out 1 more mpg or so

Try to do this on the tank of gas just before the oil change, so whatever contaminant effects are absorbed by the oil are flushed away with the change. Techron is not recommended to be used more than twice between oil changes.

I noticed now that I've been have the "check gas cap" problem because of the bad fuel tank sending unit design, if I use Chevron or Shell I don't get the check engine light and the tank fills up all the way when i fill it versus if I use other brands (Exxon/Mobil, 76, Arco/Bp) I get the problems: worse engine response from the car, tank stops filing a little above 3/4's, and there's a stronger fuel smell

Beware
I recently purschased a w203 with a m271 engine and I figured since I didn't know which kind of fuel it was getting and the m271 has had carbon build up problems I'd give it some Techron.
Anyway after the treatment the car had trouble starting up (usually just required two start cycles(no codes or running problems)).
My conclusion was the excess of deposits in the tank clogged up the filter, replaced filter and all is well. Nevertheless my "If it aint broke don't fix it" brother had his fun at my expense.
Just thought I'd share because if a w211 needs changing it also includes the fuel sending unit and not the 20$ of the usual filter.

I've never done these cleaners or treatments and never had any issues, should I start? Is it like using additives with your gas/oil that once you start you have to keep using it?

FWIW, I use Techron every now and again...just in case. Each time I do I notice a significant drop in MPG.
I will say I remember my racing days...a place in VA that cleaned injectors and I felt a huge difference in my tuned motors. I wish I could remember their names.

For some reason I've always gone down Plutoe's line of thinking on this one for the looooong time I've owned cars (barely a year lol). Is this only something that you need to do with highly tuned engines for specific applications? For some reason I don't think that it makes a big difference on a road car. Could be wrong.

If you use a Top Tier gas at every fill up, like Shell or Chevron, Mobil, etc. you probably do not need a fuel system cleaner.
If you still want to use one, Cheveron Techron's is one of the best and is actually approved by Mercedes.
Please note that the "Fuel System Cleaner," is the better Techron product. The "Fuel Injector" projector is much more diluted (and less costly because of it).
