If you change the batteries and you star
If you change the batteries and they don't work, you may need someone with a STAR system, code the keys to the ECU.
Other than that, the key looks like a nomal key.

I repaired the wire by by shifter, snapped right in half right at the shifter bottom hole where it comes out.
Hasnt worked in years.
assembled everything back together (worst in w219) , pressed shifter start button and get “key not recognized” on dash.
The key fob locks and unlocks from a distance and starts the car no problem.
Any suggestions ? I read that it could be the keyless go module ?
thanks kindly for your help !
I was able to pull the pins out of the connector/plug to do the fix. The plug on my car can be opened up to make the pulling of the pins much easier. A few pictures showing it popped open, with pins pulle out are shown. Ended up stripping maybe 3/32" to 1/8" of wire off the broken wire, dabbed a little solder on it, while dabbing a little solder on the end of the pin. 1st job wouldn't work, as I layed the wire on top of the connector, overlapping by 1/16" or so. I couldn't get the pin to go all the way back into the plug/connector, so I had to heat it up, pull it apart, and redo it. The 2nd time I soldered it, i just did it right to the end of the pin without overlapping. Still was a bit of tight fit, but she eventually popped all the way into the connector/plug. Then I used and exacto knife, cutting some very thin strips of electrical tape, wrapping around each lead from the connector/plug. Pushed the plug back into its spot on the shifter, then re-assebled everything. Once all done, had my key on me, and pressed the start/stop Keyless Go button, and VROOOM, the 'ole girl fired up!! Great feeling of accomplishment.
Before the fix, my car too was not giving me any warning or notice on the dash when I would push the Keyless Go Start/Stop button on the shifter to start. So I suspetcted the broken wire was the culprit and sure enough it was. My car is a 2004 E55.
Thanks to OP for the original post and to Marius for his post as well. All very helpful and such a great feature to get back working again!
