The door handles are known to fail often so I wouldn't let that worry you for now. Have you changed the batteries in the key lately? Once I got my start/stop wires spliced back together both my keys kept giving me a low battery warning and the keyless go wouldn't start. Changed the batteries and everything worked.

If you change the batteries and you star

If you change the batteries and they don't work, you may need someone with a STAR system, code the keys to the ECU.

Other than that, the key looks like a nomal key.

Thank you OP for this guide. I had the same problem with my keyless-go. In my instance the cable had broken in the connector. Took everyting appart. Drilled a bigger hole in the selector so I could fit some shrink tubing. Welded the cable, and finished with some glue. Work 100% now. A new selector module would have cost me almost $900 in Norway. So thank you again. =)

Well... I'm reporting back to say that it gave up again after a year of use or so. I might open it up again this summer. Hopefully I will make an update and how the fix can be improved.

Hey guys,

I repaired the wire by by shifter, snapped right in half right at the shifter bottom hole where it comes out.

Hasnt worked in years.

assembled everything back together (worst in w219) , pressed shifter start button and get “key not recognized” on dash.

The key fob locks and unlocks from a distance and starts the car no problem.

Any suggestions ? I read that it could be the keyless go module ?

thanks kindly for your help !

Red face

I've been meaning to do this for quite some time, probably 5-6 years and never dedicated the time to do it. Tackled it today. Took me 8 hours start to finish and I didn't go too fast. Took my time re-reading this post, studying pictures and making myself somewhat familiar. Mine broke the exact same way Marius' from Norway did, right at the plug. Same wire too, the white only wire. However, his plug looked slightly different than mine. HIs was a 2x2 hole plug, mine is a 3holes in a row stylei plug. Pretty much a moot point, but did notice that. In doing the job, I didn't realize from looking at the pictures that once you get everything unhooked from the shifter unit, you can remove it from the car and take it to your workbench to pull the yellowish plastic cover off and do the wire fix. That was a pleasant surprise, as fixing it in the car (if was attached still somehow) would have made the job more difficult.

I was able to pull the pins out of the connector/plug to do the fix. The plug on my car can be opened up to make the pulling of the pins much easier. A few pictures showing it popped open, with pins pulle out are shown. Ended up stripping maybe 3/32" to 1/8" of wire off the broken wire, dabbed a little solder on it, while dabbing a little solder on the end of the pin. 1st job wouldn't work, as I layed the wire on top of the connector, overlapping by 1/16" or so. I couldn't get the pin to go all the way back into the plug/connector, so I had to heat it up, pull it apart, and redo it. The 2nd time I soldered it, i just did it right to the end of the pin without overlapping. Still was a bit of tight fit, but she eventually popped all the way into the connector/plug. Then I used and exacto knife, cutting some very thin strips of electrical tape, wrapping around each lead from the connector/plug. Pushed the plug back into its spot on the shifter, then re-assebled everything. Once all done, had my key on me, and pressed the start/stop Keyless Go button, and VROOOM, the 'ole girl fired up!! Great feeling of accomplishment.

Before the fix, my car too was not giving me any warning or notice on the dash when I would push the Keyless Go Start/Stop button on the shifter to start. So I suspetcted the broken wire was the culprit and sure enough it was. My car is a 2004 E55.

Thanks to OP for the original post and to Marius for his post as well. All very helpful and such a great feature to get back working again!
