5w40 229.5 spec is the recommended oil for the i5 270cdi

Do NOT use 229.51 oil, this is low-ash oil for diesels with a DPF (particle filter). The low-ash might do damage to the regular bearings in your engine. 229.5 is aready better than anything that was out when your engine was built.

I run Valvoline SynPower 5w40 229.5 spec in my i6 320cdi and change it out every 15,000km

Low ash oil will not do any damage to engine bearings. Difference between low ash Mobil1 5W-40 ESP (229.51 oil) and Mobil1 0W-40 (229.5) in sulfated ash is like 0.7 wt% (0.6 wt% vs. 1.3 wt%). Oil additive w/low ash content plays role in DPF protection and noting else, because produces less ash when burning if oil gets into the combustion chamber. Here in states all dealers now offer only 229.51 oils for diesels. Something to consider is that low ash oils in general have lower TBN content.

Mobile 1 European Formula 0w40 will meet your spec. Use Mann fleece filters or MB filters.
