Replacing upper ball joint - e500.

My car"s upper ball joint and control arm is one piece. Does the airmatic shock needs to be removed to replace the upper control arm?

It depends on which design upper arm you have. I don't think you can get to the nut heads if you don't have the joint with 3 bolts holding it to the arm. If you have the one piece upper control arm the entire arm must be removed. The strut tower has two bolts w/nuts accessable from under the hood but to hold the head the strut would be a difficult work around.

Having same issue ... did you have to remove the air strut first or is it workable with it in place?

With the strut out how difficult was it to get the bolts securing the arm. The ones that pass through the tower into the engine bay.?
