Send me a PM with tit VIN and I'll let you know.

Thanks for the responses, guys.

I had made a copy of my datacard from the EPC online, so *duh* I checked the SA codes and indeed mine is a PZEV model with code 917: PZEV Emission USA.

No symptoms of the problem as yet, but it's nice to know that I've got another 7 years of warranty coverage. It's also probably a lesson for others who buy used models: be sure to check the data card. My car was purchased in California but immediately taken to Florida. I find that Florida cars are frequently coming in from elsewhere, probably because of people moving for retirement, so a "Florida" car might just as easily be a "Michigan" or "Ohio" vehicle.

The only problem is that if you read the warranty, you only have a 15 years/150k warranty if your car is registered in a Pzev state which would be CA, Maine, MA, Vermont, or NY. Florida is not a Pzev state so depending on what it is, coverage could be anywhere from 2-8 years. You would have to register the car in one of those states in order to get the 15/150k coverage. And considering the potential cost of repairs, it might be worth it if you have a problem.

Warranty info can be found in this link:

So it's "registered in a PZEV state" and not "PZEV equipped"?

You're making it too complicated when it's simple.

If it's not a Pzev, then there's no pzev warranty regardless of the state. In that case, the Mercedes extended warranty is better, 15 years, unlimited miles.

Okay, in reading the warranty info it seems that it has to be both bought in a PZEV state and currently registered in one. That sucks. Still, at least I'm not having the gas smell problem.

I'm not making it difficult. I have a PZEV equipped car originally sold in California. However it is currently registered in Florida.

I think if it's originally sold in CA and if you register it in a Pzev state, then you should get the 15/150k coverage. But who really knows, you'd probably have to double check with someone, there may be some other way out for them.

Happy to report that a couple months after my fuel sender unit has been replaced, the gas smell is completely gone and I am so glad it was done under warranty.

I've noticed the same fuel smell on my 08' E350 on a full tank fill-up. What would a noobie have to do to get this checked out. I read over the forum about the PZEV stuff which - I'm in Ohio and not sure where the original purchase state was........

Sorry but if you really read the forum you would know what to do! The answer is most likely on this very last page of this thread as well as on other pages in this thread.

Just read the last few pages of this thread. If your car is not a Pzev, then it should be covered, 15 years unlimited miles. To find out if it's Pzev or not, run it through a vin checker like epcnet or the several russian sites out there, 917 is Pzev, 915 is regular gas. There should also be a label in the engine compartment called the Vehicle Emission Control Information (VECI) which would say if it was Pzev or not. I don't believe Ohio is a Pzev state, but it might be covered under federal law which could range from 2 years to 7 or 8 years depending on the part. It's all in the warranty booklet. I think the fuel tank is just 7/70 on the federal warranty. Best way to find out is to call the dealer, tell them you smell gas in the cabin and have them check the vin to see if it's covered.

Newbie here and now I notice mine smelling like gas when full only. It only smells on outside not inside. Can someone tell me if its PZEV since I am in California? THX 2004 E500

Register for what? Go to your dealership and get it fixed under warranty. Done.

Well I'm confused. This thread was asking everyone to file a complaint earlier. My car is second hand so original warranty is expired. 78K miles

You must mean the 15 year deal.....

I've been there, been that in my E55 and E350. Im just trying to help out and get your confusion off you. Here is a quick run down for you. Since you're in CA even better.

-Just take your car to any MB authorized dealer and tell your service agent that "you smell fuel after full fill up" and you want to make a repair claim under "Fuel Leak issue extended warranty coverage"

-If it happens that your car is a PZEV (sa code 917) even better because the w211 pzev have different warranty. It covers all fuel tank and related parts/components etc. etc. for 15yrs/150k miles whichever first occur.

-Your MB service agent should/will tell you after he runs your vin# on the system if your car is PZEV or not.

These two following repair claims below should cost you nothing, meaning nothing out of your pocket. No need for confusion and take your car to any MB authorized dealer asap and they will also provide you a loaner car while they are repairing it.

A) If your car "IS NOT" pzev = make a repair claim under "fuel leak issue under extended warranty coverage".

B) If you car "IS" pzev =
make a repair claim under "pzev manufacturers warranty coverage".

Note. If you are in SoCali, just take your car to House of Import Mercedes in Buena Park and look for Simon Chen in Service Dept. Hes aware regarding on this situation and he will take care of you, took two cars to him already no need to explain your side.

2008 E350 and heavy gas fume odor that appears to be coming from the driver side rear. You can smell it while close to the wheel well. Could this be something else or does that appear to be consistent with the recall. Don't want to take it in unless we're sure this is the issue. Just filled the tank up yesterday and the smell appeared late yesterday and really bad today. Vehicle is at 105,000 miles and PZEV covered in CA.

Simply remove the rear seat cushion and open the fuel pump access lid. 6 screws (8mm socket). You will immediately see the gas pool in there and know what to do!
