Need advice on tires
We are due to get some new rears on my wifes E350 sport and the dealer is backordered on Michelins. The other choice they gave us was Continentals or Perellis. The Perellis are $290 vs 400 for the Continentals. What do you guys prefer between the 2?
Thanks,Chris

I had the Conti's on previously - really liked them. I have Pirellis on my Audi and not a fan (loud... but maybe it's just the model). I had a flat last week on my MB and bought a set of Michelin Pilot Sports (Conti's were not available) and am quite happy with them. Don't know durability yet - only have about 1,000 miles on them but initial reaction is positive.

I know some 07's came with conti's but I hear the newer E's come with Pirellis. The Michelins we have had previously seem to be decent tires but may wear a bit faster than I would like.

I have Michelin Pilot Sports on mine, so I'm biased. I think they ride fantastic. Has about 16K on them and they ride like new. I know they're pretty popular. What kind of Michelin are you getting? PS2's? Maybe you can switch to a different tire within the brand if possible. I'm a little weird about having different tires on my car. The Pilot Sport is pretty easily available here in Dallas (takes a day or so to arrive at Discount Tire).

Of the 3 OEM brands, I prefer Michelin and I think there's a Pilot Sport A/S Plus version that comes with a 45K miles tread warranty. However, your 07 Sport's tires are probably a larger size for the rears than the fronts, so the rear tires would be covered for only 22.5K miles (fine print in the tread warranty about staggered tire sizes). I've had them on my SL for around 8 months and they're excellent. When the OEM Conti's on my 08 E350 are done, I'll go with Michelins, and I use an indy tire dealer that has great prices and nationwide warranty coverage. Also consider whether you need to replace the TPMS sensors.

I'm curious about this - why would you need to replace the TPMS sensors? Do they eventually go bad? Are aftermarket sensors compatible with the MB sensors? How would you know you need to replace them?
I was really impressed with the MB sensor... I was driving down interstate and suddenly got a red warning on the dash saying tire pressure failure (or something like that). I pulled over and looked and all tires looked OK, but I went ahead and got off at the next exit and pulled into a gas station. I still wasn't sure which tire had an issue - so I used restroom. By time I came out, I could see tire going down. That impressed me (that car knew that far in advance of an issue)

bfisher,
The TPMS sensors have a battery life of about five years. If you get a tire pressure warning but the tire pressures all check out it probably means that it's time to replace the sensors.
It's easier to replace them when the tires are being changed, but you can do it at any time. The sensors fit on the valve stem, so they only have to break the bead at one point to change them, vs. sensors that are held on by a strap around the wheel center. Probably worth replacing the valves at the same time, they're not expensive.
Do a search for Mercedes TPMS sensors and you'll find them. Just make sure they're the right frequency. Early 211's use 315 MHz; later models use 433 MHz.

I just recently put the Michelin A/S Plus on my E500. I have used them before on my G35X and Acura CL. They will last you 40K which is great for high performance all season tires.

I think the Michelin PS2's are out of production. The replacement is the Michelin Pilot Super Sports. I've been running PS2's since I got my car .. 3rd set and love them. Never, ever going to change to anything else .. well now to the SS

Snow though, not sure, haven't tried it yet.

Chris, the Michelin's PS2's are great tires but dont last very long. My FAV tire are the Michelin Super Sports. I actually think they are better then the PS2. However, these are performance tires. If you want a more complete tire I highly recommend the CONTI DWS.

Since my E350 Sport runs a staggered set-up you can't rotate front to rears. My '09 came with conti's and the road noise drove me nuts at about 20K miles.
I switched to Michelin-Pilot Sport A/S Plus from Costco and have been happy since. They are very popular and go out of stock often.

What do you recommend for a good all-season or even performance breed tire that is decent for 4Matic vehicles in the snow? I'm happy with the Michelin on dry pavement but winter has me concerned.

4Matic winter - Continental DWS are very good
I live in Pennsylvania and my opinion, written shortly after acquiring Continental DWS is here (DWS = Dry, Wet, Snow, an all-season tire):
https://mbworld.org/forums/5029727-post16.html
I am still very happy with them after a few months. No noticeable wear after about 3k - 4k miles, as you would hope.
They are very, very good in the Wet and at least very good in Snow. (not that much snow this year, so I can't say too much.) You will probably find better for dry-only, summer environments, but you don't sacrifice much with the DWS. I have no interest in changing tires twice a year for the season, and these are the best all-seasons I've had. I am not a racing driver but I do like grip and confident handling in difficult conditions.
I have OEM Michelins on my Honda Ridgeline and it takes a lot for me to recommend something that isn't Michelin or Pirelli, but the Conti's were fantastic value and I couldn't say no.
I would not buy tires from the Merc dealer at the prices the OP seemed to suggest the dealer wanted. $400 for a Conti or almost anything else is ridiculous, if I read him right!
