fixing A/C vents

Hello all,

I am having an issue with my a/c vent. The passenger side vent control "wheel" seems to have sunken into the dash. I tried looking through the vent to see but I think I'm going to have to open up that part of the dash. Any suggestions or can someone point me in the right direction? Thanks in advance.

UPDATE: It seems the entire duct is loose. Is there any way to secure it back in place? Does it snap back into place or do I have to open it up? Ideas anyone??

A pretty easy DIY. Pull off the dash end cap and remove the screw there. Then use a hook that can go inside the top portion of the vent ( I used one fabricated from a coat hanger) and pull off the top portion of the vent. Remove the remaining screw. The vent will come fwd - remove the light wiring and you'll see that the vent has probably come apart; it is in two pieces. Use glue when putting it back together for a better fix. Check the alignment carefully of the gear that rotates the vent back 'n forth.

HTH,

I know this is an old thread, but its a top hit on google.

I fixed my pushed in vent wheel through the link above. Pry up the wood on the very corner near the wheel until it pops...I was a little afraid, but I had no damage or cracks.

Push it to the right about 2-3" and then it comes out.

The problem with mine was that the plastic housing had cracked and the inner (black) vent part was not pushed up against the housing anymore. The actual vent wheel was perfectly fine.

I pushed it back together, used some super glue on it and Fixed!

Worst case, if it fails again in a few years, you just replace the entire vent, so it really doesn't matter if the glue shuts the two pieces together. Its a 100% fix unless it fails again...but I glued well enough I can't see that happening for a long time.
